If you are searching for a new job, these prayers give you words to bring that search before God. They are written for the seasons of applications, interviews, waiting and the quiet hours when the next step is unclear. Pray them aloud as they are written, or use them as a starting point and speak your own needs in your own words.

Prayers for a New Job

Lord, you know the search I am in. You know the applications I have sent, the ones that have gone unanswered, and the lines on my résumé that I wish were stronger. You know how tired I am of checking my inbox and how hard it is to hope again after another rejection. I bring all of it to you this morning and ask you to take hold of what I cannot control.

Give me clear direction about the work you want me to do next. Show me which doors to walk through and which to leave closed, and give me peace when I cannot see the whole path. Let my skills be used well wherever I land, and let the people I work with see something of your kindness in how I treat them. Go before me into every interview and conversation, and steady my nerves when I speak about myself.

Keep me from measuring my worth by my job title or my paycheck. Remind me that you have been providing for me long before this search began, and that you will not forget me now. Help me rest in your faithfulness, work hard on the things in front of me, and trust you with the outcome. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I need work and I need your guidance. Open the right door, close the wrong ones, and give me wisdom in every conversation today. Help me to be honest, prepared and patient, and let my confidence rest in you rather than in myself. Thank you that you see me and that you are already at work. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage when you feel pulled between hope and confusion about which opportunity to pursue. Ask God to make your paths straight, and name the specific decisions you are facing so that you are trusting him with real choices.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

Pray this when a long search has worn down your sense of future. Thank God that his plans for you are good, and ask him to renew your expectation that he is working toward something worthwhile for your life and work.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Turn this passage into a prayer each time anxiety rises about money or the next interview. Bring your requests to God with thanksgiving, and ask for the peace that guards your heart while you wait.

Psalm 37:5

Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will do this…

(WEB)

Read this slowly when you are tempted to force the timing of your search. Commit your plans to the Lord, and ask him to help you wait with trust rather than panic while he moves in his own time.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this over the work you are already doing, even if it is temporary or not what you hoped for. Ask God to help you serve faithfully and wholeheartedly, knowing that your labor matters to him wherever you are.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer first thing in the morning, before checking email or job boards. Sit at a table with a cup of coffee and a notebook nearby. As you pray, you might jot down the companies you are waiting to hear from so that you can name each one before God.

You can also invite a friend, a spouse or a small group to pray it with you once a week. Ask them to hold your search in their prayers, and let them know specifically what kind of work you are seeking. Their prayers can remind you that you are not carrying this season alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every interview and every application. May he open the doors that lead to good work and give you the courage to walk through them. May he keep your heart at rest while you wait, and may you know that you are seen, loved and provided for. Amen.
