This bedtime prayer is for the moment you lie down and find that old regrets, failures, or hurts are still circling your mind. It is meant to be prayed at the end of the day, after the lights go out or as you settle into bed, to hand those memories over to God so that you can rest. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak in your own words as the night goes on.
Bedtime Prayer for Letting Go of the Past
Lord, the day is ending, and I bring You the things I have been carrying since long before tonight. I think about words I wish I had not said, choices I cannot undo, and people I have hurt or who have hurt me. Some of these memories replay so clearly that it feels as if I am living them again. Tonight I want to set them down in Your hands. I am not asking You to erase what happened, but I am asking You to take away the grip it still has on my heart and my sleep.
You know every mistake I have made and every wound I have tried to hide, and You still choose to hold me. Help me believe that what is behind me does not have the final word over who I am becoming. Where I need to forgive myself, give me the courage to do it. Where I need to forgive someone else, soften my heart enough to begin. Quiet the voice that keeps telling me I must keep punishing myself, and remind me that Your mercy is new every morning, even when I cannot yet see the morning.
As I close my eyes, I trust the past into Your keeping. Watch over my body and my mind while I sleep, guard my home and the people I love, and let me wake with a lighter heart than I went to bed with. Thank You for the grace that meets me here, for the rest You offer, and for the fact that I do not have to carry everything alone tonight. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I give You the past tonight, the parts I replay and the parts I regret. Take the weight of them from me and hold them in Your care. Forgive what needs forgiving, in me and in others, and help me rest in Your love. Guard me while I sleep and bring me to the morning with a quieter heart. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Isaiah 43:18-19
18 “Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

Read this slowly as you lie down and let God point you forward. Ask Him to show you one small new thing He is already doing in your life, even if it is only a quiet step toward peace.
Philippians 3:13-14
13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a fixed point in your evening, such as after you brush your teeth or once you have turned off the television, and pray this prayer in the same spot each night. A bedside lamp, a chair by the window, or the edge of your bed all work well. If your hands feel restless, hold a small object such as a smooth stone or a folded note, and open your hand slowly as you say the words about releasing the past.
You might also pray this with someone you trust, a spouse, a close friend, or a family member who shares your home. Ask them to pray it aloud over you on a hard night, or pray it together once a week. Hearing someone else speak your regrets to God can make them feel less like a secret you must guard alone.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who forgives completely, and who is faithful every morning, keep you through this night. May He lift the weight of yesterday from your shoulders and give you rest that reaches down into your heart. May you wake to find that His mercy has gone before you into the new day.
