This prayer is for the moments when you want to love the people around you well but find your patience, warmth or generosity running thin. You can pray it in the morning before the house wakes up, during a difficult conversation, or at night when you replay the day’s friction. Read it aloud exactly as written, or let it be a starting point and put your own names and needs into it.

Prayer for Loving Others

Father, you have loved me first and loved me well, and I come to you because I cannot love others on my own strength. Some days my heart feels closed, especially toward the people who test my patience: the coworker who takes credit, the family member who keeps repeating the same hurt, the neighbor whose habits drive me crazy. Soften what has hardened in me. Show me where I have judged too quickly and where I have withdrawn when I should have stayed close.

Give me eyes to see the people in front of me as you see them, carrying burdens I may not know about. When I am tempted to answer harshly, put a pause in my mouth. When someone needs a kind word, a meal, an hour of my attention, or simply forgiveness, remind me that it is available and that you will provide what I lack. Let my love be patient and practical, not only a feeling but a choice I make again each day.

Above all, let my love for others flow from my love for you. Keep me close to your presence so that I am not drained by every demand but refilled by your grace. Make me a person others find safe, warm and honest. In the name of Jesus, who laid down his life for his friends and enemies alike, I pray. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and I am short with the people near me. Help me love the person in front of me right now. Soften my tone, open my hands, and give me a kind word or a patient listen. Remind me that you have loved me when I did not deserve it, and let that shape how I treat others today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Corinthians 13:4-5

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil…

Read this slowly and turn each quality into a request. Ask God to make you patient where you are quick to irritate and kind where you are tempted to be curt. Let the description become a mirror you return to during the day.

John 13:34-35

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

(WEB)

Jesus does not simply suggest love; he gives it as a command and as the mark of his followers. Pray that your love would be recognizable to others, and ask him to show you one concrete way to love someone today.

Romans 12:10

In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…

(WEB)

Paul pictures love as devoted affection and a willingness to honor others first. Use this verse to pray for the people who are hardest to honor, asking God to help you see their worth.

1 John 4:19

We love him, because he first loved us.

(WEB)

Our love for others is a response to God’s love for us, not a debt we must pay to earn it. Pray this verse when you feel empty, asking God to fill you with his love so that it can overflow to those around you.

Colossians 3:12-13

12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

This passage links compassion, kindness and forgiveness as clothing we put on deliberately. Pray that you would dress yourself in these qualities each morning, especially when there is a grievance you are holding onto.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as while your coffee brews or on the drive to work, and keep this prayer nearby on your phone or a note card. If you are struggling with a particular person, pause before a meeting or visit and pray their name aloud. Your hands can help too: write the name of someone you find difficult on a slip of paper and place it somewhere you will see it, then ask God for one small act of kindness toward that person this week.

This prayer also works well shared. Pray it with a spouse, a roommate, a small group or your children, taking turns adding names and needs. When others pray with you, you are reminded that love is a community practice and that you do not have to carry it alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who loved us first fill your heart with patience and warmth today. May he open your eyes to the people who need you, steady your words, and give you courage to forgive. May you be someone others find a little more loved for having met you.
