This bedtime prayer for the weary is written for the end of a long day, when your body is tired and your mind will not slow down. Pray it at night, once the lights are low, either reading it aloud exactly as written or using it as a starting point and speaking your own words in the same spirit.

Bedtime Prayer for the Weary

Lord, the day is ending and I am worn out. I carried more than I could hold: the messages I answered, the tasks I never finished, the conversations that left me drained, and the quiet worries that followed me from room to room. Some of what I am tired of is not mine to fix tonight. I bring it to You and set it down, one piece at a time, the way I would set down a heavy bag at the door.

Be near me while I sleep. Guard my rest against the replaying of old mistakes and the rehearsing of tomorrow’s fears. Quiet my thoughts the way evening quiets the street outside. If I lie awake, let me be aware that You are awake too, and that You do not grow tired or run short of strength. Hold my family, my home and the people I love in Your care through the dark hours, and keep harm far from every door.

Thank You for the small gifts of this day: the warm meal, the sound of a voice I love, the moment of unexpected kindness, the strength I did not know I had until I needed it. Receive my tiredness as an honest offering, and give me the rest I could not give myself. In the morning, help me wake with fresh mercy and a steadier heart. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am spent and I know I cannot carry this night on my own. Take what I could not finish today and what I am afraid of tomorrow. Give me sleep, guard my heart while I rest, and watch over the people I love. Thank You for this day, even its hard parts. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let Jesus’s invitation become personal. Name the particular weight you are carrying tonight and tell Him you are coming to Him with it, not after it is resolved.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse links rest with trust. As you pray it, say the words as a declaration that God is the one keeping watch, so that you can let your guard down without being careless.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse is a gentle correction to the belief that everything depends on your effort. Pray it as permission to stop striving and to trust that God gives rest to those He loves.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Pray this as a promise for the night hours. Ask God to be the one who does not slumber, and let the image of a watchful keeper steady a mind that is racing with what might go wrong.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

When you feel used up, this passage reminds you that God’s mercies are renewed each morning. Pray it as a hope for tomorrow, asking for fresh compassion to meet you when you wake.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray it in the last few minutes before you turn off the light, while you are still in the bed or the chair where you usually rest. Keep a small notebook or your phone nearby, and if something urgent comes to mind, write it down so you can release it to God without getting up to deal with it. Sitting with your hands open on your lap, or resting one hand on your chest, can help the words settle in your body as well as your mind.

If you share a home, invite a spouse, friend or child to pray the closing lines with you, or take turns reading the sentences aloud. If you live alone, you might text someone who loves you a single line from the prayer and ask them to pray it for you at the same hour. Being prayed for by another person can make the weariness feel less solitary.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you give you rest tonight. May He quiet every anxious thought and hold you steady through the dark hours. When you wake, may you find His mercy waiting for you, fresh as the morning and sure as His faithfulness.
