When you feel discouraged, these Bible passages give you a steady word from God for the moments when your energy is low and hope feels thin. They are arranged by the kind of discouragement you may be facing, so you can find the right passage quickly. Each one points to God’s presence, faithfulness, or strength in places where you feel least able to stand.

Verses for When Your Strength Is Gone

Some days discouragement arrives as plain exhaustion, when even small tasks feel like too much. The passages in this group speak to weariness and remind you that God does not measure your worth by how much you can produce.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to the person who has run out of ideas and energy. Isaiah says God gives strength to the weary and power to the weak. Today, pause before your next task and name one thing you cannot do alone, then ask God for the strength to take the next small step.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites the tired and burdened to come to him, without listing conditions. When you feel drained, you can take this invitation literally. Set down one worry during your lunch break and spend five minutes simply sitting with Jesus in silence.

Psalm 73:26

My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

(WEB)

The psalmist admits that his body and heart are failing, yet he finds God to be his strength. This honest confession gives you permission to admit your limits. Write this verse on a card and keep it in your pocket for the moments when your own resources feel empty.

Verses for When Hope Feels Far Away

Discouragement can also make the future look closed off, as if nothing will change. These passages anchor hope in God’s promises, not in your circumstances, and they encourage you to keep looking ahead with trust.

Romans 15:13

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

(WEB)

Paul prays that God would fill believers with joy and peace so that hope overflows. Notice that hope here comes from God and is nourished by trust. When you wake up feeling hopeless, begin the day by thanking God for one thing you can trust him to do, however small.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Written by someone surrounded by ruin, these words insist that God’s love has not run out. The writer calls the mercies new every morning. Tomorrow when you wake, speak these lines aloud before you check your phone, and let them set the tone for your day.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

God spoke these words to exiles who could not see how their situation would end. The verse reminds you that God holds plans that are larger than your present season. Write down one hope you have been afraid to name, and offer it to God as a prayer.

Psalm 42:5

Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him for the saving help of his presence.

(WEB)

The psalmist questions his own heart, then speaks to it directly. This is a helpful model when discouragement talks loudly. Try asking yourself why you feel downcast, then answer with a reminder of God’s faithfulness and tell yourself to hope in him.

Verses for Feeling Alone or Forgotten

When discouragement isolates you, it can feel as though no one notices your struggle, including God. The passages here assure you that God is near, attentive, and present in your hardest seasons.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

This verse says God is near to the brokenhearted and saves those crushed in spirit. It describes God’s nearness in your pain, not only after it passes. When you feel ignored, speak a short prayer naming your hurt and trust that God hears it.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Moses encourages Israel before they enter a frightening new season, telling them the Lord goes with them. The promise of God’s presence matters most when you feel left behind. Consider calling or texting one trusted person today so you are not carrying this alone.

Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

(WEB)

The psalmist walks through a dark valley and says he fears no evil because God is with him. The verse does not promise the valley will vanish, only that God walks through it beside you. In your darkest hour tonight, repeat the words “you are with me” slowly as you breathe.

Hebrews 13:5

Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.”

(WEB)

The writer quotes God’s promise never to leave or forsake his people. Notice how this is a commitment, not a feeling that comes and goes. Write the phrase “God has not left me” on a sticky note and place it where you will see it during the day.

Verses for Facing Fear and Uncertainty

Discouragement often grows from fear of what might happen next. These passages address anxiety about the future and call you to trust God’s control and goodness.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks directly to the fearful, promising strength, help, and support. The repeated “I am” statements show God’s active involvement. When fear rises, pray this verse slowly and name one specific fear, then ask God to hold it with you.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul instructs believers to bring every anxious thought to God in prayer with thanksgiving. The result he describes is a peace that guards the heart. Before bed tonight, list three things you are anxious about, then thank God for one thing you already have.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

David writes this psalm while in danger, and he chooses to trust rather than deny his fear. The verse shows that faith and fear can exist together. When you feel afraid, say “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you” as a simple act of choosing God again.

How to Use These Verses

Write the passages that speak to you on index cards, in a notebook, or as a note on your phone. Keep them where you naturally pause during the day, such as by the coffee maker, on your bathroom mirror, or as your lock screen. Repetition helps truth settle into your mind when your feelings are unreliable.

Read a passage slowly, then ask God what it means for the specific discouragement you feel today. You may find it helpful to pray a verse back to God in your own words, or to read it aloud during a walk. Over time you will notice certain verses return to you in hard moments, which is one way God keeps his word near you.

A Short Prayer for when you feel discouraged

Lord, you see me when I feel tired, forgotten, and afraid. I bring you the heaviness I am carrying today, and I ask for your strength where mine has run out. Remind me of your faithfulness through these words you have given, and help me believe that you are near. Lift my eyes beyond this moment to the hope you have promised. Thank you for staying with me. Amen.
