This list gives you Scripture to read aloud, pray over, or write on a card when you are opening a new home, whether you are the one moving in or the friend standing in the doorway with a casserole. These passages share a common thread: they ask God to be present in the everyday rooms of a house, at the table, at the door, and in the ordinary hours when people come and go. They are good choices for a housewarming because they turn attention from the furniture to the people who will live, eat, and rest there.

Verses for Blessing the Doorway and the Threshold

Before anyone steps inside, many families want to ask God to guard who comes in and goes out. These verses speak to that moment of arrival and departure, and they work well when read at the front door.

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

This verse reaches beyond the walls to the ordinary comings and goings of daily life. Try reading it aloud as the first person crosses the threshold, then keep a small reminder by the door to pray for each person who leaves for work or school.

Deuteronomy 6:9

You shall write them on the door posts of your house, and on your gates.

(WEB)

Moses told Israel to write God’s commands on the doorposts of their homes, so that faith would be visible wherever they turned. A modern version of this is a simple framed verse on the entry wall, a visible promise that this house belongs to the Lord.

Verses for Hospitality and an Open Table

A new home is often first tested at the table. These passages speak to welcoming strangers and friends alike, and they remind the household that their generosity is part of their witness.

Romans 12:13

Contributing to the needs of the saints; given to hospitality.

(WEB)

Paul lists hospitality alongside sharing with needy believers, which tells you it is not a minor social courtesy but an act of love. Consider setting aside one evening each month for guests, and let the first meal in the new house be one you share with someone who may not have a place to be.

Hebrews 13:2

Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for in doing so, some have entertained angels without knowing it.

(WEB)

The author reminds readers that some who were welcomed unawares turned out to be messengers of God. Keep this in mind when you open the door to a neighbor you barely know, and treat each guest as someone worth listening to closely.

Luke 24:29

They urged him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is almost evening, and the day is almost over.” He went in to stay with them.

(WEB)

After a long walk on the road to Emmaus, two disciples urged a stranger to stay with them for supper, and they recognized Jesus in the breaking of bread. Let this verse shape the hour you spend at the table, asking God to make the meal a place where he is known.

Verses for Peace and Rest in the Home

A house is meant to be a place of rest, not only of activity. These verses ask God to bring calm into the rooms where people sleep, argue, recover, and simply breathe.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

The psalmist says that unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. This is a humbling verse to read in a house you have just finished paying for, and it invites you to name the builder, not only the work.

Isaiah 32:18

My people will live in a peaceful habitation, in safe dwellings, and in quiet resting places.

(WEB)

Isaiah describes a people dwelling in peaceful habitations and secure resting places. Pray this over the bedrooms in the house, asking that each room become a place of quiet where tired people can sleep well.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

David says he lies down and sleeps in peace because the Lord alone makes him dwell in safety. Read this verse as the last thing you do at night in the new home, and let it be the first thing you hear each morning.

Verses for Gratitude and Dedicating the House to God

Many believers mark a new home with a prayer of thanks and an intentional handing over of the space to God. These passages model that kind of gratitude and dedication.

Joshua 24:15

If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

(WEB)

Joshua declares that he and his household will serve the Lord, a public commitment made by the head of a family. Consider speaking a similar declaration over your household during the housewarming, naming aloud the commitment you are making together.

1 Chronicles 29:11

Yours, the LORD, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty! For all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, the LORD, and you are exalted as head above all.

(WEB)

David’s prayer of praise acknowledges that everything comes from God and belongs to him. Use this verse to begin your housewarming prayer, thanking God for the house before you ask anything of him.

Psalm 100:4

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, and bless his name.

(WEB)

The psalm invites worshippers to enter the gates with thanksgiving and into the courts with praise. Let this verse set the tone of the gathering, so that the first thing your guests hear is a grateful heart rather than a tour of the rooms.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three of these passages rather than all fifteen at once, so that each one has room to settle. Write them on cards, place them in the entry, the kitchen, and the bedroom, and read them when you pass them during the first weeks in the house. Many families find that a verse becomes a shared memory when it is read together at the same time each week.

When you pray these verses, speak them aloud and then respond in your own words. You might read a passage at the doorway, pray over the table before the first meal, and close the evening by reading Psalm 4:8 together in the dark hallway. Repetition in the ordinary hours makes the blessing part of the home itself.

A Short Prayer for Housewarmings

Lord, thank you for this house and for the people who will live in it. We do not own these walls in the end; they are held in your hands, and so are we. Guard the comings and goings of everyone under this roof, and make the doorway a place of welcome for friends and strangers alike.

Fill the kitchen with good meals and honest conversation, and let the table be a place where you are known. Bring rest to the bedrooms and peace to every room, so that each person who sleeps here wakes refreshed. Make this home a shelter for your people and a light for those who visit. Amen.
