This list gives you Scripture about praying for others, arranged by the situations where intercession is most often needed: a friend in trouble, a difficult relationship, a morning when you simply cannot find the words. It is written for anyone who wants to pray for a person and does not know where to begin. These passages share a common conviction: prayer for others is not a duty to perform alone, and God hears the requests we bring on behalf of people we love.

Verses for Lifting Up a Friend in Trouble

When someone you care about is struggling, the urge to help can outrun your ability to fix anything. These verses point you back to the simple act of bringing that person before God. They remind you that intercession is itself a way of loving someone.

James 5:16

Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.

(WEB)

James links prayer with the healing of relationships and the restoring of the community. Choose one friend this week and pray for them by name each evening, asking God for whatever they need most right now, even if you are unsure what that is.

Philippians 1:3-4

3 I thank my God whenever I remember you, 4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy…

(WEB)

Paul prays for the Philippians with gratitude and joy, not with anxiety. Try beginning your prayer for a friend by naming one thing you thank God for in them, then asking for their good. Gratitude often makes intercession feel lighter.

Ephesians 6:18

With all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints…

(WEB)

Paul asks believers to pray at all times and to keep alert for the needs of others. Keep a short list on your phone of people to remember, and let it prompt you whenever you pause during the day, in the car or at the sink.

Verses for Praying Through a Difficult Relationship

Some of the hardest people to pray for are the ones who have hurt us or whom we find it hard to love. Scripture does not ask you to pretend the difficulty away. It asks you to bring even that tension honestly before God.

Matthew 5:44

But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you…

(WEB)

Jesus tells his listeners to pray for those who treat them badly. This is not a command to feel warmly toward them immediately. Start with one plain request for their well-being, and let the prayer slowly soften your own heart over time.

Luke 6:28

Bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you.

(WEB)

Here Jesus pairs blessing with prayer for those who oppose us. When you think of the person who has wronged you, speak a simple blessing over them out loud, asking God to give them what they truly need.

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

(WEB)

Paul urges prayers for all people, including those in authority, which would have been a hard thing for many early believers. Consider naming a person in authority you disagree with, and pray that they would govern wisely and that peace would mark their community.

Verses for Those Who Feel They Have No Words

There are seasons when prayer feels like a silence you cannot fill. These passages assure you that God hears you even when your words run out, and that the Spirit carries what you cannot put into speech.

Romans 8:26

In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.

(WEB)

Paul writes that the Spirit helps us in our weakness, especially when we do not know what to pray for. On days like this, sit quietly for a minute with a person’s name in mind, trusting that God understands the groaning you cannot express.

Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

(WEB)

The psalmist invites us to hand our burdens to the Lord. When you pray for someone else’s load, name the specific weight you see them carrying and imagine placing it in God’s hands alongside yours.

Colossians 4:12

Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, salutes you, always striving for you in his prayers, that you may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.

(WEB)

Epaphras is described as wrestling in prayer for the believers in Colossae. Think of one person whose spiritual growth you care about, and pray that they would stand firm and mature in God’s will, even if you cannot see the change yet.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verses you return to most often on a card or in the notes app on your phone, with the name of the person you are praying for beside them. Reading the verse first and then the name helps your prayer stay anchored to Scripture rather than drifting into worry.

Choose a regular time, such as after breakfast or before bed, to pray through a short list of people. You do not need long sessions. Five focused minutes with a clear request for each person often does more good than an hour of scattered thoughts.

A Short Prayer for Praying for Others

Lord, I bring before you the people I love and the people I find hard to love. You know their fears, their hopes and the burdens they carry that they have never spoken aloud. Give them the peace that only you can give. Where they are weary, renew their strength. Where they are wounded, bring healing in your own time and way. Teach me to pray for them faithfully, even when I do not see results, and let my intercession be an expression of the love you have poured into my own heart. Amen.

A Blessing

May the Lord who hears every prayer keep the people you lift up in his care. May his grace meet them in their need, his peace guard their hearts, and his faithfulness sustain them through every season ahead. And may you go forward knowing that your prayers are never wasted in his presence.
