This is a Christian prayer for a friend, written for the moments when you want to lift someone up to God but do not know where to begin. Pray it when your friend is struggling, when they have asked for prayer, when you are driving past their house and their name comes to mind, or when you simply want to ask God to be near them. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words from there.

Christian Prayer for a Friend

Lord, you know my friend better than I ever could. You know the thoughts they carry at night, the worries they do not say out loud, and the hopes they have not yet dared to name. I ask you to be close to them today. Wrap them in your peace where they feel anxious, and give them rest where they feel worn out. Help them sense that they are not alone, even on the days when their friends and family feel far away.

Father, I also ask for wisdom for the decisions in front of them. Where they are unsure which way to turn, show them the next faithful step, and give them the courage to take it without needing every answer first. Guard their heart from bitterness and fear. Remind them of who you are and how much you love them, and let that truth steady them when everything else feels uncertain.

Thank you for the gift of this friendship. Bless the good things in their life, and gently meet the hard things with your grace. Let me be a loving presence to them, and help me to speak and act in ways that point them toward you. In the name of Jesus, I trust them into your care. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my friend is carrying something heavy right now, and I bring them to you. Be near them in this moment and give them the strength they need for the next hour. Calm their fears, lighten their load, and let them feel your presence. Show me how I can love them well today. Thank you that you hear us and that you care for them more than I do. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul invites us to bring every worry to God with thanksgiving. Pray this for your friend, asking that the anxious thoughts they carry would be handed over to God, and that his peace would guard their heart and mind.

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

This psalm lifts the eyes from the immediate problem to the God who made heaven and earth. Pray it for your friend when they feel overwhelmed, asking that they would look up and remember where their help comes from.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Nothing can separate believers from the love of God in Christ. Pray this passage over your friend in seasons of loneliness or fear, asking that they would know deeply that God’s love holds them firmly.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks directly to the fearful, promising his presence and strength. Use this verse as a prayer for your friend’s courage, asking the Lord to remind them that he is with them and will sustain them.

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

(WEB)

Carrying one another’s burdens is part of how Christ’s love is lived out among us. Pray this for your friend, and also ask God to show you practical ways to share their weight.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for a friend in the early morning, before the day’s demands arrive, or in the evening as a way of handing the day back to God. You might sit at your kitchen table with a cup of coffee, or walk a quiet street while you speak. Keeping a small note of your friend’s specific needs nearby can help your prayers stay concrete and honest.

Consider writing your friend’s name at the top of a page and praying through the prayer slowly, pausing after each line to let God speak to your heart. If you are able, let them know you are praying for them. You might also invite another friend or a small group to pray with you, so that the burden is shared and your friend is held by more than one set of prayers.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your friend and keep them safe in every season. May his face shine upon them and bring them peace. May they know, today and always, that they are deeply loved by the God who never leaves them.
