This Christian prayer for a small group is written for a gathering of believers who meet to study Scripture, share their lives, and pray for one another. You can pray it aloud as written at the start or close of your meeting, or use it as a starting point and speak your own requests in the same spirit. It works well when the group is first gathering, or when the room feels tired and the conversation needs to turn toward God.

Christian Prayer for a Small Group

Lord, thank You for calling us together. We come into this room with different histories, different burdens, and different ways of showing up on a Tuesday evening. Some of us are carrying hard news from work, some are tired from caring for children or aging parents, and some of us came because we did not know where else to go. Gather us now as one body. Quiet the chatter in our heads and help us actually listen to the people beside us.

Give us honesty without shame. Help each person here to say what is true without having to perform or pretend. Where someone is hurting, let the rest of us respond with patience rather than quick advice. Where someone is doubting, give us grace to stay present instead of trying to fix them. Keep our words kind, our confidences safe, and our hearts open to what You want to show us through one another. Teach us to pray specifically, to bring each other’s names before You, and to follow up when we say we will.

Lord, we ask that this group would be a place where Your love is visible, not just described. Let us encourage one another in our faith, and correct one another gently when we drift. Keep us from gossip and from comparison. And when we leave tonight, send us back into our homes and workplaces carrying what we have received here. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, we are gathered in Your name, and we need You here. Quiet our hurry and open our ears to each other. Protect what is shared in this room, and let kindness and truth travel together through every conversation. Make us a group that points people toward You, not toward ourselves. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Matthew 18:20

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them.”

(WEB)

Pray this verse when your group feels small or uncertain about whether anything is really happening. Thank the Lord for His promise to meet with two or three who gather in His name, and ask Him to make His presence felt around the table.

Hebrews 10:24-25

24 Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching.

(WEB)

Use this passage to pray for how the group spurs one another on. Ask God to show each person one practical way to encourage someone else this week, and to keep you faithful in showing up.

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

(WEB)

Pray this when someone in the group is carrying a heavy load. Ask for willingness to share that weight, and for wisdom about how to help without taking over or making the person feel less capable.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and thank God for the strength that comes from companionship. Pray that no one in the group would fall alone, and that you would notice quickly when someone has stumbled.

Proverbs 27:17

Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance.

(WEB)

Pray this for the way believers sharpen one another through honest conversation. Ask God to give the group courage to speak truth in love and humility to receive it when it comes back to you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time that works for everyone, such as the first few minutes after you sit down or just before you close. Before you begin, have each person write down one request on a card or in a notes app, so the prayer can rise from real concerns rather than vague generalities. Read the main prayer together, pausing after each paragraph so people can add their own words silently or aloud.

If your group prays out loud in turn, invite each person to finish the sentence “Lord, I ask You to…” and then have everyone respond with “Hear our prayer.” Someone who is less comfortable speaking can simply hold a hand on the table or nod while another person prays. Afterward, consider writing the requests in a shared document so you can return to them next week, and invite someone to ask about the most important one before the next meeting.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless each person who gathers in this room and keep them steady in their faith. May He make His face shine upon this group and give every member peace that goes deeper than the evening. May your conversations be honest, your listening be patient, and your friendships be a light to the people you meet this week.
