This is a written prayer for your church, its leaders, its members and its mission. It is meant for times when you want to lift your congregation before God on a Sunday morning, during the week when a ministry is struggling, or in the quiet before a church meeting. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak the words that come to mind in your own voice.

Christian Prayer for My Church

Lord, I bring my church before you today. You know every family that sits in our pews and every person who comes through the doors for the first time, nervous and hoping to belong. You know the pastors and elders who carry burdens no one sees, the Sunday school teachers who prepare lessons late into the week, and the volunteers who set up chairs and make the coffee before anyone else arrives. Strengthen them, Father, and give them rest.

Make our church a place where the truth of your Word is taught faithfully and the love of Christ is felt in real ways. Heal the hurts between brothers and sisters that we have stopped talking about. Give us humility to listen, patience to forgive, and courage to speak the gospel to neighbors who have never heard it. Draw in the lonely, the grieving and the searching, and let them find a family here. Keep us from becoming a club for people who already agree, and make us a body that welcomes those still finding their way. Let our worship point people to you and not to ourselves. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my church is in your hands. Be near to our pastors and leaders, and guard their hearts. Help each member serve with joy and speak with kindness. Bring people to know your love through us, and let our community see Jesus in the way we treat one another. Use us for your purposes this week. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:3

Being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for unity in your congregation, asking God to help members keep peace with one another even when they disagree about small things. Ask him to make the bond of the Spirit stronger than any quarrel.

Acts 2:42

They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray for the shape of your church life: teaching, fellowship, shared meals and prayer. Ask that these habits would be strong and sincere, and that new believers would be woven into them naturally.

Romans 12:4-5

4 For even as we have many members in one body, and all the members don’t have the same function, 5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

(WEB)

Pray this passage for each member to recognize that they belong to one body and have a real part to play. Ask God to show people their gifts and to help them use those gifts for others.

Hebrews 10:24-25

24 Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching.

(WEB)

Let this verse shape your prayer for encouragement. Ask that people in your church would stir one another toward love and good works, and that nobody would drift away from gathering together.

1 Thessalonians 5:11

Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.

(WEB)

Pray this for the mutual care that builds a church up. Ask God to make your members quick to encourage, to notice who is struggling, and to build one another up in quiet, practical ways.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helps to pray for the church early in the morning, before the day fills up, or on Sunday before the service begins. Choose a chair in your home where you can sit with an open Bible or your church directory beside you. If you know names of people who are hurting or serving, keep a pen nearby and let the prayer move you to speak those names aloud before God.

You do not have to pray this alone. Consider reading it with a spouse, a small group or a prayer partner from your church, taking turns with the paragraphs. If you are a leader, you might pray it with your elders or staff during a meeting. Shared prayer reminds everyone that the church belongs to Christ, not to any single person.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your church and keep it in his care. May he make your leaders strong, your members faithful and your doors open to all who are seeking him. May the grace of Jesus Christ and the love of the Father and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit rest on every person who calls this congregation home.
