This is a written Christian prayer for physical healing, meant for the times when your body is weak, in pain, or waiting on a diagnosis and you do not know what to say to God. Pray it in the morning before the day’s appointments, at a bedside, or in the car before a hard phone call. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your need is more specific.

Christian Prayer for Physical Healing

Lord, you formed this body and you know every ache in it. I bring you my health today, the pain I try to ignore, the tiredness that sits on me by midafternoon, and the worry that keeps me awake when the house is quiet. You see the test results I am afraid to open and the symptoms I cannot explain to anyone. Nothing about my condition is hidden from you, and I am grateful that I do not have to pretend with you.

I ask for healing, Father, in whatever form you choose. If it is your will to restore my strength completely, I ask you to do it. If the healing comes slowly, through doctors, medicine, and rest, then give me patience with the process and wisdom to follow the care I have been given. Steady the hands of those who treat me, and give them clear minds and good judgment. Keep my family and friends from carrying fear they were never meant to carry alone. Give me peace that does not depend on how I feel this hour, and let me sense your nearness in the ordinary moments of this day. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am hurting and I need you right now. Touch this body with your healing power, ease the pain, and strengthen what is weak. Guide the people who care for me, and give me rest where I cannot find it. Whatever comes next, I trust that you are with me in it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 103:2-3

2 Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits; 3 who forgives all your sins; who heals all your diseases…

(WEB)

David begins this psalm by reminding himself of what God has already done. Pray these verses by naming specific kindnesses God has shown you in the past, then asking him to heal the sickness you are facing now.

Jeremiah 17:14

Heal me, O the LORD, and I will be healed. Save me, and I will be saved; for you are my praise.

(WEB)

Jeremiah is honest in this short cry for help, asking God directly to heal and save. Use this verse when you feel you cannot make a clear request and simply need to say the words of asking.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks to his people in fear and promises to strengthen them. Read this slowly while you sit with a painful diagnosis, and let the promise of his presence speak to the anxiety that comes with it.

James 5:14-15

14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, 15 and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

(WEB)

James describes the early church bringing the sick to elders for prayer and anointing. Pray this passage for yourself or someone else, asking for faith in the prayer and trust in the Lord who raises up the weak.

Psalm 41:3

The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.

(WEB)

The psalmist speaks of God sustaining him on his sickbed and turning his bed in illness. Use this verse on nights when you are too tired to pray at length and need to rest in the assurance that God watches over you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when your body is most awake and your mind is least rushed, often first thing in the morning or just before you go to sleep. Sit somewhere comfortable and quiet, such as a chair by a window, and rest your hands open on your lap or hold a cup of tea. If the pain is sharp, you can pray lying down, and there is nothing wrong with stopping and starting again as your strength allows.

Consider asking someone you trust to pray this prayer with you, either in person or over the phone. A spouse, a close friend, or a member of your church can carry your request alongside you, and you can ask them to pray it for you on the days when you have no words left. Keep a notebook beside your bed to write down what you prayed and any changes you notice, whether they are medical improvements or small signs of God’s care.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who made this body hold you close in your weakness and restore your strength in his time. May he surround the people who care for you with wisdom and steady hands, and may you feel his peace settle over you like a quilt on a cold night.
