This is a Christian prayer for the worried, written for the moments when your thoughts run ahead of you and the future feels heavier than you can carry. Pray it in the early morning before the day begins, late at night when sleep won’t come, or whenever a fear rises up in the middle of an ordinary task. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own worries in your own words.

Christian Prayer for the Worried

Lord, you know the things that keep me awake. You know the bills I keep adding up in my head, the phone call I’m dreading, the test results I haven’t heard yet, and the quiet fear that I am not doing enough for the people who depend on me. I bring each one to you now, one at a time, and I ask you to take what I cannot control out of my hands.

Father, slow my racing mind. When my thoughts spin ahead to every possible bad outcome, bring me back to today and to the next step in front of me. Help me to trust that you are already in tomorrow, and that nothing I fear is hidden from your sight. Settle my body and my breath, and let my heart rest in the fact that you are near.

I give you my worry, Lord, and I ask you to replace it with peace that doesn’t depend on how things turn out. Give me the courage to do what is mine to do today, and the humility to leave the rest with you. Thank you for holding me when I cannot hold myself together. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am anxious right now and I don’t know what to do with it. Take this fear from me for a moment and hold it in your hands. Steady my breathing, quiet my thoughts, and remind me that I am not alone in this. Help me take the next small step and trust you with the rest. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul’s instruction is to bring every anxious thought into prayer with thanksgiving. When you feel worry gathering, name it specifically to God, then thank him for something you already see him doing. Pray this verse slowly, letting the promise of peace settle in after you have made your requests.

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

(WEB)

Peter’s words are short and direct: hand over your cares because God cares for you. Try praying this verse by naming one specific worry and then saying it back as a casting-off, a deliberate choice to let it go into God’s keeping.

Psalm 46:1-2

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas…

(WEB)

The psalmist describes the ground shaking and still declares God a refuge. Pray this when the situation feels unstable, reminding yourself that God is a steady place to run to even when the earth seems to move under your feet.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks directly to fear here, promising his presence, his strength and his help. Speak the verse back to him as a personal word, putting your own name in the place of the listener and asking him to make the promise real in your specific situation.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

(WEB)

Jesus reminds his listeners that each day has enough trouble of its own. Use this verse to pray for the grace of today alone, asking God to give you what you need for this day and to keep tomorrow’s concerns in his hands.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time and place where you can sit without interruption, such as a chair by a window, the edge of your bed, or your car before you go inside. Keep something in your hands while you pray, like a warm cup of tea, a smooth stone, or your own open palms resting on your knees. Let your breathing slow as you read, and pause after each paragraph to let the words sink in before you move on.

If you find yourself too anxious to pray alone, ask a trusted friend, a spouse, or a pastor to pray it with you or over you. Many people find that hearing someone else speak these words aloud brings relief when their own voice feels too tired. Return to this prayer on hard days and on ordinary ones, because worry tends to come back, and the habit of bringing it to God gets easier with practice.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you be near when your thoughts grow loud. May he give you rest that doesn’t depend on circumstances, and strength for the next step. May you know, in your deepest place, that you are held, known and loved, and that nothing you fear is beyond his care.
