This page offers Christian prayers for baptisms, written for the moment a child, a new believer, or a friend steps into the water and makes a public declaration of faith. You can pray these words in the days before the service, in the car on the way to the church, or quietly as the candidate comes up from the water. Read them aloud as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Christian Prayers for Baptisms

Father, thank you for the water and for the promise that goes with it. Today we bring before you the one who is about to be baptized. Some of them have known you for a long time, and some are only beginning to understand what it means to belong to you. Whatever their age or story, we ask that you meet them in this moment and make it real to them. Let the water remind them that they have died to their old way of life and been raised to walk in your new life.

We also pray for the nerves, the questions, and the mixed feelings that often come with a day like this. Calm their hearts. If they feel unsure of their own faith, remind them that you are the one who holds them, not their ability to get everything right. Be near to the family and friends standing in the crowd, too, and help them rejoice without pressure. Give the pastor clear words and steady hands, and let everyone present see you at work.

Lord, let this baptism be the first of many days when this person chooses to follow you. Keep them rooted in your word, surrounded by people who love them, and quick to come back to you when they fall. We give this moment to you with thanks and with trust. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, be with the one being baptized today. Calm their heart and let them feel your nearness in the water. Remind them that they belong to you, and let this step be the beginning of a faith they will keep for the rest of their life. Thank you for the grace that makes this possible. Amen.

Psalm 23:1-3

1 The LORD is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Pray this psalm for the new believer as a reminder that the Lord who leads them into the water will also lead them through every season afterward. It gives them a picture of steady, faithful care.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the full version the evening before the baptism, sitting in a quiet room where you will not be interrupted. Keep a Bible open to the verses above, and read each one slowly before you move on. If you are the one being baptized, you might write the prayer on a card and carry it with you that morning.

If you are praying for someone else, pray the short version as you watch them enter the water, and hold their hand or rest a hand on their shoulder while you speak. Invite a few close friends or family members to pray the main prayer together, each reading one paragraph. Their voices will carry the moment well, and everyone present will feel part of it.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who called you by name go with you into the water and rise with you onto the shore. May his peace guard your heart, his word guide your steps, and his people walk beside you for all the days ahead. Be held, be known, and be sent in the strength of the one who made you new.
