This list gives you Bible verses to read, pray and hold onto when you are lying awake at night and cannot switch off. It is for anyone whose thoughts keep racing, whose body will not settle, or who wakes at three in the morning carrying worry they cannot name. Each passage points to a God who keeps watch when you cannot, and who invites you to bring your restlessness to him rather than wrestle it alone.

Verses for When Your Mind Will Not Stop

Racing thoughts often feel loudest after the lights go out. The verses in this section speak to a mind that keeps replaying conversations, deadlines and fears, and they call you back to trust one step at a time.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul names anxiety directly and then points to prayer as the way to hand it over. When worries circle at midnight, try writing each one on a scrap of paper, then speak them to God one by one before you let the page go.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This short verse is a bedtime confession of trust, spoken by someone who knows danger is real. Say it slowly as you lie down, letting each phrase slow your breathing and remind you that rest is something God gives.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

The peace described here comes from keeping your mind fixed on God rather than on the problem itself. During a sleepless stretch, choose one attribute of God, such as his faithfulness, and return to it each time your thoughts drift away.

Verses for the Hours When Fear Feels Heavy

Some nights the trouble is not a list of tasks but a deep sense of dread about health, money, family or the future. These passages address fear head on and remind you that God is near in the dark.

Psalm 56:3-4

3 When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. 4 In God, I praise his word. In God, I put my trust. I will not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?

(WEB)

The psalmist does not pretend to be fearless; he admits fear and then chooses trust. Name your fear honestly in the quiet, then deliberately place the word “trust” beside it as an act of will.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks to Israel with a direct promise of presence, strength and help. When fear pictures you alone, read this verse aloud and let it correct the story your fear is telling you.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

David frames fear against the backdrop of God as light and salvation. On a frightened night, picture a small lamp in a dark room, and remember that the one who is your light is with you there.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

(WEB)

Jesus gives peace that differs from what the world offers, and he tells his disciples not to let their hearts be troubled. Lying awake, you can receive this as a gift instead of something you must manufacture on your own.

Verses for Trusting God With the Morning

Often the hardest part of a sleepless night is the thought that tomorrow will be just as heavy. These verses look ahead, placing the coming day in God’s hands and inviting you to rest in his ongoing care.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

David says he lay down, slept and woke again because the Lord sustained him. Let this verse remind you that waking up is itself evidence of God’s faithfulness, even when your night was broken.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Written in the middle of grief, these lines insist that God’s mercies are renewed every morning. When dawn feels far away, hold onto the promise that a fresh supply of mercy is coming with the light.

Psalm 30:5

For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning.

(WEB)

Weeping may stay for a night, but joy comes with the morning. This is not a dismissal of your pain but a reminder that the night is not the final word on your life.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to him for rest. Picture yourself bringing the whole tangled day to him, setting down what you cannot carry and allowing yourself to stop striving.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

The psalm says God does not slumber or sleep, and so he keeps watch over those he loves. When you cannot sleep, it can steady you to know that someone awake and faithful is guarding your life.

How to Use These Verses

Keep a small notebook or your phone’s notes app beside your bed and write two or three of these verses on a single page. When you wake in the night, read one slowly rather than scrolling through news or messages, which tend to feed the anxiety further.

Pray the verses as well as reading them. Turn a line like Psalm 4:8 into a personal sentence such as “Lord, I will lie down and sleep because you keep me safe,” and repeat it until your body begins to follow your words.

A Short Prayer for Sleepless Nights

Lord, you do not sleep, and you are never caught off guard by what keeps me awake. I bring you the thoughts that will not settle and the fears I cannot name. Quiet my mind with your presence and remind me that I am held. Let your peace reach the places where worry has taken root, and give me rest that I did not have to earn. Be my watchman through the dark hours, and let the morning come with mercy that is new. Amen.
