If you are looking for prayers for the start of the week, this page gives you a written prayer you can read on Sunday night or Monday morning, along with a shorter version for a quiet moment and five Scripture passages to pray alongside it. Read it aloud as it is written, or use it as a starting point and put your own worries in your own words.
Prayers for the Start of the Week
Lord, another week is opening in front of me, and I feel the weight of it before I have taken a single step. There are messages waiting in my inbox, a list of tasks I have not finished, and conversations I am not sure how to have. Some of what I face is ordinary, and some of it keeps me awake. I bring all of it to You now, the good parts and the hard parts, and I ask You to be the first thing I think about this morning.
Father, go before me into the hours ahead. Steady my hands for the work, and give me clear thinking when my mind wants to race. Where I am tempted to measure my worth by what I get done, remind me that I am Yours before I am productive. Help me to be patient with the people I will see today, especially the ones who are difficult to love. Guard my tongue when I am tired and my heart when I am discouraged.
Be with the people I carry in my heart this week, the ones who are sick, grieving, worried about money, or far from home. Hold them close in ways I cannot. And when the week goes sideways, as I know some of it will, let me remember that You have not lost track of anything. I trust You with what I cannot control. Thank You for new mercies every morning. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, this week has begun and I am already feeling its pressure. Slow me down long enough to breathe and to remember that You are with me. Give me what I need for the next task, and then the one after that. Help me to walk through this day as someone who belongs to You. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”
(WEB)
When Monday feels loud and rushed, pray this verse slowly and let the call to stillness interrupt your list. Ask God to quiet the noise in your mind so you can hear Him above it.
Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
(WEB)
Pray these words over the fresh start of a new week, thanking God that His compassion did not run out over the last one. Ask Him to help you receive today’s mercy without carrying yesterday’s failures forward.
Matthew 6:34
Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.
(WEB)
Read this verse as a prayer for the day you are in, not the week you fear. Ask Jesus to help you set down tomorrow’s worries and take up only what today requires.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Use this passage to bring every anxious item on your mind into prayer, one by one. Ask for the peace it describes to guard your heart while you work through the list.
Isaiah 40:31
But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.
(WEB)
Pray this verse when you feel drained before the week has even started. Ask God to renew your strength in the places you are running on empty.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer before the phone is picked up on Monday morning, while the house is still quiet. Sit at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee or tea, and keep a pen nearby. As you read, write down the one or two concerns that feel heaviest, and read those sentences again slowly. Your hands can hold the cup or the pen, a small reminder that you are holding this week in God’s hands too.
You can also pray this together with a spouse, a roommate, or a friend who is facing a similar week. Take turns reading a paragraph each, and finish by naming one thing you will ask God for on behalf of the other person. If you are praying alone in a busy place, the shorter version works well during a commute or in the minutes before a meeting.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you into every hour of this week and walk beside you in each task. May He give you steady hands, a patient heart, and the peace that holds steady when plans change. May you rest in His faithfulness today and find Him waiting for you tomorrow.
