This is a daily prayer for joy, written for the mornings when you wake up already tired, the evenings when the day has drained the good out of you, or any moment when you long to feel glad again. Pray it in the morning before the day takes hold, or at night as you lay the day down. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart needs them.

Daily Prayer for Joy

Lord, I come to you today with a heart that is not as light as I would like it to be. Some of it is weariness from work that never seems to end. Some of it is worry about money, about the health of people I love, about the conversations I have been avoiding. Some of it is simply the quiet grayness that settles over me when I forget how much you have already given. I do not want to pretend I feel better than I do.

So I ask you to fill me with a joy that does not depend on how this day goes. Remind me that gladness can grow in the soil of ordinary things, a cup of coffee, a kind word from a stranger, a moment of sun through the window. Lift the heaviness I carry, and let my face and my voice show that you are good to me. Help me look for your hand in today’s small mercies, and give me the strength to share what I find. Let my joy in you be deeper than my circumstances. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I need you right now. My heart is tired and my thoughts keep circling back to what is hard. Give me joy that does not wait for my situation to change. Lift my eyes to the things you have already done for me, and let gratitude rise in me like a quiet spring. Make me glad in you again, even for a few breaths, even if only for this moment. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 16:11

You will show me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the paths you feel lost on, then asking God to show you his presence in them. Joy in this psalm is rooted in being near God, so ask him to draw you close before you ask for anything else.

Nehemiah 8:10

Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for today is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”

(WEB)

Read this slowly as a reminder that joy is a strength given by God, not a feeling you must manufacture. Thank him for the strength you already have, even if it feels small, and ask him to renew it through his joy.

Psalm 30:5

For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning.

(WEB)

Use this verse for the seasons when sorrow has lasted longer than you hoped. Pray that the morning joy promised here would reach the tired places in you, and that you would trust God’s timing with the night you are still walking through.

Romans 15:13

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a request for hope and peace that overflow into joy. Ask the God of hope to fill you so fully that the joy spills over into your conversations, your work, and your home today.

John 15:11

I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full.

(WEB)

Speak this verse back to Jesus, asking him to make his joy your own. Ask him to remain with you through the day so that the gladness he offers would stay with you when the pressures return.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed time each day, perhaps just after you wake or while your coffee brews, and keep it simple. Sit somewhere quiet if you can, or stand at the kitchen sink with your hands busy in warm water. Some people like to write the prayer on a card and keep it in a wallet, a car visor, or near the bathroom mirror so the words are close when the mood turns gray.

You can also pray this prayer with someone else. Invite a spouse, a friend, or a child to read the lines with you, taking turns with each paragraph. Praying together often lifts a heavy heart faster than praying alone, because you hear your own needs spoken by someone who cares for you.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who gives joy to the weary fill you today with a gladness that holds steady under every weight. May he show you small gifts along the way and give you eyes to notice them. May the peace of God guard your heart, and may the joy of Christ be your strength from morning until night.
