This daily prayer for kindness is written for the ordinary moments when patience runs thin and it is easier to be curt than gentle. Pray it in the morning before the day begins, or at any point when you notice your words getting sharp. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Daily Prayer for Kindness
Lord, I come to You at the start of this day asking for a kind heart. I know how quickly I can become short with the people closest to me, and how easily I can speak before I have listened. Soften the edges of my tone and slow my reactions. Let my first response to others be patience rather than irritation, and let my words carry grace even when I am tired, rushed, or disappointed.
Show me the people I will meet today who need a little gentleness: the coworker who seems distracted, the child who keeps asking the same question, the stranger in a checkout line who is having a worse day than I am. Give me eyes to notice them and a willingness to act. Help me to give help without making a show of it, and to receive kindness from others without pride. Where I have already hurt someone, bring it to mind so I can make it right. Thank You that Your kindness toward me is steady, and let some of that steadiness flow through me today. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, make me kind in this moment. Slow my tongue, soften my heart, and open my eyes to the person in front of me. Let my words bring comfort rather than wound, and let my hands do what is good. Remind me that I am loved, so that I can love others freely. Help me to be gentle today, not because I feel like it, but because You are gentle with me. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer while they are making coffee, getting dressed, or driving to work, so the words are connected to something you already do each morning. Keep a note on your phone or a card on the bathroom mirror if you tend to forget. Praying it with your hands busy, such as folding laundry or packing a lunch, can also help the words settle into the rhythm of your day.
A spouse, friend, or small group can pray this together, taking turns reading a sentence each. If you are a parent, you might pray it aloud with your children and ask them who they think needs kindness that day. Praying with others makes it easier to remember that kindness is practiced in community, not only in private.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who has shown you such patient love fill your words and actions today. May He soften every hard edge, steady every hurried moment, and give you eyes to see those who need you. May the people you meet leave your presence feeling a little more seen, a little more welcomed, and a little more loved.
