This is a daily prayer for your pastor, written to be prayed over the person who leads, teaches and carries your church. Pray it in the morning before the day’s sermon preparation, visits and meetings begin, or in the evening when you are reflecting on how God worked through their week. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about the particular needs you know.

Daily Prayer for My Pastor

Lord, I lift up my pastor to you this morning. You know the weight they carry, the sermon that still needs finishing, the hospital call they will make before lunch, and the email from a family in crisis that arrived late last night. Give them wisdom for each decision and clarity when the path is unclear. Let them rest in you rather than in their own strength, and remind them that the church belongs to you and not to them alone.

Father, guard their heart from discouragement and from the quiet pride that can creep in when people praise their words. Keep their marriage and their family strong, and give their children room to know you as their own God rather than as a job their parent does. Protect their sleep, their health and their friendships outside the church. When they feel alone at the front of the room, let them sense that you are near.

Speak through them today, Lord. Let the words they preach and pray be yours, and let them point people toward Jesus instead of toward themselves. Give them joy in the ordinary faithfulness of their work, and let them see the fruit of their labor in lives that are changing. Thank you for calling them and for sustaining them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless my pastor today. Give them wisdom for what they must decide, strength for what they must carry, and peace in the places where they feel stretched thin. Keep them close to you and let your presence be the thing they feel most. Protect their family and guide every word they speak. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:11-12

11 He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers; 12 for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ…

(WEB)

Pray that your pastor will know their calling as a gift Christ gave to the church, and that they will be equipped to build others up in faith rather than carry every task alone.

1 Timothy 4:16

Pay attention to yourself, and to your teaching. Continue in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

(WEB)

Ask God to help your pastor keep a close watch on their own life and teaching, so that their character and their message stay aligned with what they proclaim.

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.

(WEB)

Pray for your pastor’s work to be a joy and not a burden, and for the people of the church to support and encourage them in the care they give to others.

Philippians 1:3-6

3 I thank my God whenever I remember you, 4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy, 5 for your partnership in furtherance of the Good News from the first day until now; 6 being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Thank God that the work he began in your pastor and in your church is one he will carry on to completion, and ask him to renew their confidence in that promise.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Pray that your pastor will build the church with God’s help rather than in their own strength, resting in the truth that the Lord is the one who builds and watches over the work.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time and place that stays the same each day, such as a chair by the kitchen window with a cup of coffee, or the drive to work before your phone starts ringing. Keep a small note with your pastor’s name and one or two specific needs you know about, so the prayer stays concrete. If you have a Bible open, read a verse aloud, then pray the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let it sink in.

Invite others into this habit. A spouse, a prayer partner, a small group or a family at the dinner table can each pray the prayer over your pastor in turn. You might also write the name of your pastor on a card and place it where you will see it, or send them a short message after you pray saying that you lifted them up that morning. Encouragement like that often reaches them at the moment they need it most.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your pastor and keep them. May he make his face shine upon them and be gracious to them, and may he give them peace that stays steady through every demand of the coming day. May they be strengthened by the people who love them and sustained by the one who called them.
