This daily prayer is for anyone who wants to grow closer to God and become more like Christ, one ordinary day at a time. Pray it in the morning before the day’s demands arrive, or in the evening when you want to look back honestly and ask for what you missed. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add your own words where your heart is more specific.

Daily Prayer for My Spiritual Growth

Lord, you have started a good work in me, and I want to cooperate with it. Some mornings I open my eyes already tired, already reaching for my phone, already thinking about everything I have to get done. Slow me down. Help me remember that I am your child before I am anyone’s employee, parent, or project. Give me a hunger for your Word that outlasts the first few days of good intentions, and help me read it with an open heart rather than a checklist.

Work on the places I keep avoiding. You know the impatience I bring into my home, the envy that creeps in when others seem to get the breaks I want, and the small dishonesties I tell myself do not count. Make me honest about them, and then make me willing to change. Form in me the fruit of your Spirit: patience with the people who test me, kindness when I would rather be right, and self-control when my mood is running the show. Teach me to pray when I feel nothing, and to trust that you are at work even when I cannot see it.

Keep me humble, Father, and keep me close to you. Let my growth show up in quiet faithfulness more than in spiritual pride or big feelings. Use this day however you choose, and let me notice where you are already present in it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am asking you to grow me today. Shape my thoughts, soften my words, and steady my hands for the work in front of me. Help me notice when I drift from you, and draw me back gently. Let me be a little more like Jesus by the time this day ends, even if no one else notices. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Pray this when growth feels slow or invisible. It reminds you that God began the work and is faithful to finish it, so you can rest in his commitment rather than only your own effort.

Romans 12:2

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

(WEB)

Pray this asking God to renew the way you think, especially the habits of mind that pull you back toward old patterns. Ask him to show you what his good and pleasing will looks like in your ordinary week.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

Pray this before you open Scripture each day, asking the Lord to light the next step in front of you. It is a simple request for guidance, one step at a time, rather than a whole life mapped out at once.

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Pray this slowly, naming each quality of the Spirit and asking God to produce it in you. Name the one you most need that day, and ask him to grow it where you are weakest.

2 Peter 3:18

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.

(WEB)

Pray this asking to grow in grace and in knowledge of Jesus, not only in religious activity. Let the request turn your attention back to Christ himself, the one who is the source of all real growth.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find the first ten minutes after waking to be the best time for this prayer, before the phone, the news, and the to-do list take hold. Sit somewhere quiet, perhaps near a window or at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in your hands. Holding something warm can help you stay present and keep your mind from wandering to tomorrow’s meetings or yesterday’s arguments.

If you have a spouse, close friend, or small group, invite them to pray it with you or to pray the blessing over you at the end. Keep a short notebook beside your Bible and write down one thing you sense God is teaching you each day. Reading the notes back at the end of the week often shows growth you would otherwise miss.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who began a good work in you keep working in you every day. May he steady your heart, sharpen your attention, and make his love more real than your fears. May you walk in his peace and grow in his grace, one faithful step at a time.
