This is a daily prayer for patience and understanding, written for the moments when your temper runs short, your patience is thin, and you find it hard to see the other person’s side. You can pray it in the morning before the day begins, at the start of a difficult conversation, or at night when you replay the day. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to what you are carrying.
Daily Prayer for Patience and Understanding
Lord, you have been patient with me in ways I will never fully count. Today I come to you asking for the same kind of patience to pass on to the people in my life. Some of them are hard to be around. A child asks the same question for the fifth time, a coworker misses the point of what I said, a spouse is tired and short with me, and I feel the heat rising before I have even thought about it. Slow my reaction down. Give me room between what happens and what I say.
Father, give me understanding that goes past my first assumptions. Help me to listen for what is underneath the frustration, the fear or the exhaustion that may be driving someone’s words. Where I have already decided what a person means, loosen my grip on that story. Show me where I have been impatient with myself too, expecting more from my own heart than I am able to give today. Teach me to receive your grace as readily as I try to extend it to others. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I need your patience right now, because mine is running out. Quiet the hurry in me. Help me hear what this person is really saying and give me the words that bring peace rather than heat. Remind me that you have been patient with me, and let that shape how I respond in this moment. Amen.

Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud…

Colossians 3:12-13
12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.
(WEB)
Pray these verses when someone has hurt you or tried your patience again and again. Ask for the strength to bear with them and to forgive as God has forgiven you, which is often a daily choice.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer first thing in the morning, while the house is quiet and before the day’s demands arrive. Sit somewhere you can be still, with a cup of something warm in your hands, and read the prayer slowly. Let a pause follow each sentence so the words can settle before you move to the next one. If you have a notebook, write down the person or situation that came to mind most strongly, and bring it back to God when the day gets difficult.
You can also pray this prayer with someone else. A spouse, a friend, or a small group can take turns reading a paragraph aloud and then pray for the person named in the middle section. Praying together makes it easier to remember that patience and understanding are gifts you receive from God, not qualities you have to produce alone.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who has been patient with you give you a steady heart today. May he open your ears to hear what is being said and what lies beneath it. May he give you the grace to meet each person with gentleness, and may you rest in the knowledge that you are held by a faithful God who is never in a hurry to give up on you.
