This night prayer is for anyone who goes to bed weighed down by discouragement, when the day has left you tired in spirit and the quiet makes the heaviness louder. You can pray it at bedtime, read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. Either way, it gives you a way to hand the day to God before you sleep.
Night Prayer for the Discouraged
Lord, the day is ending, and I am bringing you what it held. Some of it was small and wearing: the unanswered messages, the work that did not come together, the moments I felt I was failing the people I love. Some of it was heavier, a worry I cannot stop turning over, a hope that seems further away than it did this morning. I set all of it down in your hands now. You see what I could not fix today, and you are not surprised by any of it.
Quiet my thoughts tonight. When I lie down and my mind starts replaying every mistake and every fear, remind me that you are awake and attentive to me. Let my body rest the way you designed it to, without guilt for what was left undone. Help me to stop measuring my worth by what I finished. Tell me, in whatever way you choose, that I am still yours even when I feel empty and discouraged.
Watch over me through the night. Guard my heart and my family, and everyone I am carrying in my prayers. Give me sleep that restores me, and wake me tomorrow with a little more courage than I have tonight. Thank you for the good things today that I almost overlooked, and for your faithfulness that does not depend on how I feel. Into your care I give this day and this night. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am tired and discouraged, and I do not have the words for everything I am carrying. Take this day from me and hold it for a while. Quiet the fear that keeps me awake, and remind me that you are near. Give me rest tonight, and help me trust that tomorrow is in your hands too. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 34:18
The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

When discouragement makes you feel far from God, pray this verse slowly and let it name what you are experiencing. Ask him to draw near to your broken places before you fall asleep, and trust that he is already there.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
This verse is a bedtime prayer in itself. Pray it as you settle down, releasing your need to control the night and resting in the safety it describes.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

Read this as an invitation rather than a command. Bring the exact weight you are carrying tonight and tell Jesus specifically what makes you weary, then leave it with him.
Psalm 55:22
Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.
(WEB)
Pray this verse by naming the burden you have been trying to carry alone. Ask God to take it, and notice whether any part of you is ready to let go.
Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

When the day has felt like failure, pray these verses to remember that God’s mercy is renewed each morning. Thank him for the new start that waits when you wake.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time just before you turn off the light, after the last screen has been put away. Sit on the edge of your bed or lie down with a hand resting on your chest, so your body can join the prayer. Read it slowly, pausing after each paragraph to let the words settle before continuing.
If you share a home with someone, you might pray it together, one of you reading aloud while the other listens. If you live alone, consider texting a trusted friend the line that means the most to you tonight, so they can pray for you while you sleep. Either way, you are not carrying this discouragement by yourself.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord guard your going out and your coming in, and let his peace settle over you tonight. May the weight you carried today feel lighter in his presence. May you wake to mercies that are new, and find that the God who sustained you through the dark is with you in the morning light.
