This lesson teaches children that God knows the end of every story and keeps his people safe, even when things seem frightening. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the verses, and the activity.

Big Idea

God knows how everything will turn out, and he takes care of the people who trust him. We can be brave and wise while we wait for him to finish his plan.

Memory Verse

Daniel 12:3

Those who are wise will shine as the brightness of the expanse. Those who turn many to righteousness will shine as the stars forever and ever.

(WEB)

Ask the children to stand tall with their arms stretched up like a shining star, then slowly lower them as they say the verse together. Repeat it three times, getting a little louder each time, so the words feel like sunshine.

The Story: Daniel 12 for Kids

Daniel was an old man who had seen many strange and wonderful things. One day he was standing by a wide river, and he looked up and saw a man dressed in shining white linen. The man was standing above the water, and two other people stood on the riverbanks.

Daniel heard one of them ask the man in white, “How long will these amazing things take to finish?” The man lifted both of his hands toward the sky and made a solemn promise. He said that all of these things would be finished in God’s good time.

Daniel did not understand what he had heard, so he asked, “My lord, what will happen at the end?” The man told Daniel to go on with his life, because the words were closed up and sealed until the right time came. Some people would make themselves clean and pure, but the wicked would keep doing wrong.

Then the man gave Daniel a loving promise. He told him to keep going until the very end, because Daniel would rest and would have his place in God’s plan when the days were over. Daniel could trust that God was in charge of every part of the story.

Read It Together

Daniel 12:1

“At that time Michael will stand up, the great prince who stands for the children of your people; and there will be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time. At that time your people will be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book.

(WEB)

Point out that God’s helper Michael is described as standing up for God’s people. Ask the children how it feels to know someone strong is looking out for them.

Daniel 12:2

Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

(WEB)

Explain gently that this verse talks about God bringing people back to life one day. Let the children know that God keeps every promise, including the promise of new life with him.

Daniel 12:13

“But go you your way until the end; for you will rest, and will stand in your inheritance at the end of the days.”

(WEB)

Point out the words “go your way until the end.” Show the children that God tells Daniel to keep living faithfully, and that rest and a special place are waiting for those who trust him.

Talk About It

  • What did Daniel see and hear by the river, and how do you think he felt?
  • Why do you think God wanted Daniel to keep going even when he didn’t understand everything?
  • How can you be like a shining star when you are kind to the people around you?
  • What is one thing you can trust God to take care of this week?
  • Who is someone you can tell when you feel scared, the way Daniel could tell God?

Activity Ideas

Shining Star Craft

You will need paper, yellow crayons or markers, scissors, and glue. Have each child trace a star shape on the paper, cut it out, and then color it bright. On the back, they can write a word that shows how they can shine for God, such as “kind” or “brave.”

Stand Firm Movement Game

Mark a starting line with masking tape or a piece of string. Call out a simple instruction, such as “hop like a bird” or “stand tall like a tree,” and have children move while saying the memory verse. When you call “Stand firm,” everyone freezes and holds their shining star pose until you say “go” again.

Take-Home Promise Card

Cut index cards in half and give each child a small card, a pencil, and a sticker or two. Ask them to draw a picture of something they can trust God with this week. Encourage them to show the card to a family member at home and tell them the story of Daniel by the river.

Teacher Notes

This chapter reveals that God holds the future in his hands, including the final outcome of history and the resurrection of the dead. For adults, it encourages faithful waiting, wise living, and confidence that God’s purposes will be completed, even when we cannot see the whole picture.

With children, avoid making detailed predictions about the timing of the end or treating the numbers in the chapter as a countdown they can calculate. Keep the focus on trusting God and living faithfully, which is the heart of what Daniel was asked to do.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank you that you know how everything will end, and that you take care of your people. Help us to be brave and wise like Daniel, and to shine for you in the way we treat others. Thank you that we can rest in your promises. Amen.
