This lesson teaches children that God comforts His people and is faithful forever, even when they feel afraid. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including a short story, a memory verse, and one simple activity.

Big Idea

God is the one who comforts us, and His love and rescue last forever. We do not need to be afraid of people, because God is always with us and always faithful.

Memory Verse

Isaiah 51:12

“I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you, that you are afraid of man who shall die, and of the son of man who will be made as grass?

Have children stand up tall, then put both hands on their hearts. Say the first words slowly together, then give a gentle hug to themselves on the last words. Repeat it three times so the motion helps them remember God as their comforter.

The Story: Isaiah 51 for Kids

Long ago, God’s people lived in a city called Jerusalem, and many of them felt scared and sad. Some had been taken far away from home, and the city had been broken down. They felt like nobody was looking after them. Their hearts felt heavy, and they wondered if God had forgotten them.

God sent a messenger named Isaiah to speak to His people. God said, “Look to the rock you were cut from.” He reminded them that Abraham and Sarah were their family, and that God had blessed them and made them into a great family. God wanted them to remember that He had always kept His promises.

God also promised to comfort Jerusalem. He said He would make the empty, lonely places beautiful again, like a garden. He said that joy and singing would come back to the city. God told His people, “Listen to me, my people.” He wanted them to know His rescue would last forever, even when the sky and earth grew old.

Then God spoke to the people who felt afraid of others. He said, “Don’t fear the reproach of men.” Some people had been mocking and bullying them. God said that those people would not last, but His righteousness, which means always doing what is right and good, would last forever.

God also reminded the people of something powerful He had done long ago. He had made a path through the sea so His people could walk across safely. God said, “I, even I, am he who comforts you.” He told them that the ones He rescued would come home with singing, and sadness would run away.

The story ends with God’s people hearing that they were not forgotten. God was holding them in His hand, and He would turn their sorrow into joy. The same God who made the whole world was taking care of them.

Read It Together

Isaiah 51:3

For the LORD has comforted Zion. He has comforted all her waste places, and has made her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD. Joy and gladness will be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.

Point out that God does not just comfort the people. He also makes the broken, empty places beautiful and full of gladness. Ask the children to name a place where something sad could become happy.

Isaiah 51:7-8

7 “Listen to me, you who know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law: Don’t fear the reproach of men, and don’t be dismayed at their insults. 8 For the moth will eat them up like a garment, and the worm will eat them like wool; but my righteousness will be forever, and my salvation to all generations.”

Show the children that God says not to be afraid when people say mean things. Explain that God’s love lasts longer than any insult, and those words cannot take away His promises.

Isaiah 51:11

Those ransomed by the LORD will return, and come with singing to Zion; and everlasting joy shall be on their heads. They will obtain gladness and joy. Sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

(WEB)

Point out the words about singing and everlasting joy. Explain that God promises a happy ending for His people, and sadness will not last forever.

Talk About It

  • What is something that makes you feel scared or worried sometimes?
  • What did God say to His people about being afraid of other people?
  • How can you tell that God has been faithful to you in your life?
  • Why do you think God wanted His people to remember Abraham and Sarah?
  • What would you like to sing to God because He comforts you?

Activity Ideas

Comfort Heart Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw a big heart on the paper and fill it with things that make them feel safe, like family, a pet, or a favorite blanket. Then ask them to write or draw a small picture of God holding the heart. Talk about how God comforts us the way a parent holds a child.

Sea Path Walk

You will need a blanket, two pieces of masking tape, and a small open space. Lay down the tape to make a path, and let the children take turns walking it slowly while the others sing a happy song. Explain that God made a path through the sea for His people. Let them cheer as each child reaches the end.

Comfort Card for Home

You will need an index card, a pencil, and markers. Have each child write or draw one thing God has done to comfort them, then add the memory verse at the bottom. They can take the card home and place it where they will see it, such as on a bedroom door or by the bed. Encourage them to read it aloud when they feel scared.

Teacher Notes

Isaiah 51 speaks to a people who had suffered loss, exile, and public shame, and it assures them that God is still their Comforter, Creator, and Redeemer. For adults, the chapter shows that God’s righteousness and salvation are not temporary, and that He remains faithful even when circumstances feel overwhelming. It also invites trust rather than fear of human opposition.

Avoid overstating to children that God will always remove every problem they face right away. The chapter promises God’s faithful comfort and final joy, but it does not promise an immediate end to every hardship. Frame the lesson around God’s presence and faithfulness, not guaranteed quick solutions.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You for comforting us when we feel scared or sad. Help us remember that You are always with us and that Your love lasts forever. We do not need to be afraid, because You hold us close. Amen.
