This lesson teaches children that God is still in charge even when the world seems frightening and confusing. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including a short story, questions, and an activity.

Big Idea

Even when scary things happen, God is still in control, and we can stay faithful to Him. He knows every person by name, and He will always keep His promises.

Memory Verse

Revelation 13:10

If anyone is to go into captivity, he will go into captivity. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, he must be killed. Here is the endurance and the faith of the saints.

Teach the children to place both hands on their hearts, then slowly lift them up toward the ceiling as they say the verse together. Repeat it three times, getting a little softer each time, to help them remember that they can stay strong and trust God.

The Story: Revelation 13 for Kids

One day, John was standing by the sea and he looked up. Out of the water came a terrible beast with ten horns and seven heads. Each head had a bad name written on it, and the beast looked very frightening. John had never seen anything like it before.

The beast was powerful, and people were amazed by him. One of his heads had been hurt badly, but then the wound was healed. Many people began to worship the beast and the dragon who gave him power. They asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can fight against him?”

Then another beast came up out of the earth. This beast looked a little like a lamb, but he talked like a dragon. He made people build a statue to honor the first beast, and he even did amazing tricks that made fire fall from the sky. He tried to fool people into following the beast instead of God.

This beast also told everyone to receive a mark on their hand or forehead. People who would not take the mark could not buy or sell anything. Many people were afraid, and some were tempted to go along with the crowd. But God’s people chose to stay faithful and trust Him, even when it was hard.

John wanted the church to understand that God had written the names of His people in the Lamb’s book of life. He told them to listen carefully and to remember that God’s wisdom is greater than anything that frightens us. The people of God did not have to fear the beasts, because the Lamb was still on the throne.

Read It Together

Revelation 13:1

Then I stood on the sand of the sea. I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads. On his horns were ten crowns, and on his heads, blasphemous names.

(WEB)

Point out that John saw this beast coming up out of the sea, and remind the children that God allowed John to see it so he could tell others. Ask them what they think John felt when he saw something so strange.

Revelation 13:8

All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been killed.

(WEB)

Explain that God’s book of life belongs to the Lamb, Jesus, and that every person who belongs to Him is written there. Let the children know that God never forgets His people, even when they feel alone or afraid.

Revelation 13:18

Here is wisdom. He who has understanding, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. His number is six hundred sixty-six.

(WEB)

Help the children see that this verse asks us to be wise and to think carefully about what is true. Tell them that God gives understanding to those who ask Him for it, and that we can pray for wisdom every day.

Talk About It

  • What is something that made you feel scared or worried this week?
  • How do you think John felt when he saw the strange beast coming out of the sea?
  • Why do you think God wanted His people to stay faithful even when it was hard?
  • What are some ways we can remember that God is still in charge when we feel afraid?
  • Who is someone you can turn to when you need help being brave?

Activity Ideas

Draw Your Own Beast Picture

Give each child a sheet of paper, crayons, or markers, and ask them to draw a silly or scary beast with several heads or horns. Once they finish, have them draw a small lamb in the corner of the picture to remind them that Jesus is always with His people. Talk about how the lamb is stronger than any beast.

Stand Strong Game

Ask the children to stand in a circle and pretend to be the beast by making big, wobbly movements and loud noises. Then call out, “Stand strong!” and have them freeze and stand tall with their arms by their sides. Repeat several times to practice staying calm and steady when things feel confusing.

Book of Life Bookmark

Cut strips of cardstock or heavy paper and give each child one to take home. Let them write their name on the bookmark and decorate it with stickers or drawings. Encourage them to put it in their Bible and read it aloud to a family member, reminding them that God knows their name.

Teacher Notes

Revelation 13 describes two powerful beasts that oppose God and try to lead people away from Him. For adults, the chapter is a reminder that God’s people face real pressure to compromise, yet God remains sovereign and His people are kept secure in His book of life. Scholars differ on exactly how to identify the beasts, so focus on the faithfulness the passage calls for.

Avoid overstating the frightening details to children, especially the numbers and the mark. Keep the emphasis on God’s control, the Lamb’s victory, and the call to trust and remain faithful, so that children feel secure rather than anxious.

A Prayer to Close

Father, thank You that You know each of us by name and that You are still in charge when things feel scary. Help us to be brave and to trust You every day. Give us wisdom to know what is true and courage to stay close to You. Amen.
