An evening prayer for family health gives you a way to hand the day’s worries, and the people you love, to God before you go to sleep. It is meant for the end of the day, when the house is quiet and you are thinking about the fever, the appointment, the cough that will not go away, or the older parent whose health is slipping. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Evening Prayer for Family Health

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring my family to you before I rest. I thank you for every person under this roof and for the ordinary mercies of this day: the meal we shared, the breath each of us drew, the work that got done. Thank you that none of us has been left alone with our bodies and our fears. You made us, and you know exactly how each of us is holding up tonight.

I lift up the people I worry about most. Be near the child who is sick, and give them rest that comes easily. Steady the parent who is tired and in pain, and give them strength for tomorrow. Be with anyone waiting on test results, anyone recovering from surgery, and anyone who is quietly afraid and has not told anyone. Where there is illness, bring healing in your own time and your own way. Where there is no cure, give us peace and company. Guard us through the night, so that no one wakes in fear without knowing you are awake too.

Lord, I release my need to control every outcome into your hands. I trust you with what I cannot fix, and I ask you to make me a calm and loving presence for my family in the morning. Let us sleep well, wake refreshed, and remember that our health and our lives rest in your care. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my family is in your hands tonight. Watch over each one who is sick or tired or afraid, and give them rest. Heal what can be healed, and give peace where healing has not come yet. Keep us safe until morning, and help us trust you with what we cannot fix. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

Pray this verse as a promise you can rest on. Name each family member as you say it, and ask God to give your household the kind of sleep that comes from trusting him.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this passage when you are worried about someone who is sick or far away. Let the picture of a watchful keeper settle your heart, and ask God to keep watch over each person by name.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your weariness, and the weariness of your family, into this invitation. Pray it slowly, and ask Jesus to give rest to the body and the mind of anyone who is worn down tonight.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this for the family member who is running out of strength. Ask God to give power to the weary and to renew strength for each person who needs it tomorrow.

Psalm 103:2-3

2 Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits; 3 who forgives all your sins; who heals all your diseases…

(WEB)

End your prayer with thanks, remembering the healing God has already given your family. Let gratitude for past mercies strengthen your trust for the nights still ahead.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the last quiet part of the evening, after the dishes are done and the lights are dimmed. Sit somewhere you can be still, such as the edge of a child’s bed or the kitchen chair where you sat with the day’s worries. If your hands need something to do, hold a small object that reminds you of your family, or lay a hand on the shoulder of the person who is sick while you pray.

You do not need to pray alone. Read the prayer aloud with a spouse, a grown child, or a friend who also loves your household, and let them add a name or a need. If someone in the family is too ill to pray, speak the prayer over them quietly as they sleep. God hears a prayer offered on someone else’s behalf just as clearly as one offered for yourself.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord watch over your family tonight and every night. May he give rest to the weary, comfort to the suffering, and peace to those who lie awake. May the morning find each one of you a little stronger, held in the steady love of God.
