This evening prayer for my children is written for the end of the day, when the house is quieting and you want to hand your sons and daughters to God before they sleep. Pray it at bedtime, at the kitchen table after dinner, or beside a bed once the lights are low. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about the particular worries and joys of your household.
Evening Prayer for My Children
Father, the day is ending, and I bring my children to you. Thank you for the moments we shared today, the laughter at the dinner table, the scraped knee that healed, the homework finally finished. Thank you that they are yours before they are mine, and that you know every hour they spent and every feeling they carried home with them.
Lord, I release to you the things that followed them through the day: the friend who was unkind, the test they are dreading, the question about who they are becoming. Take the weight of those things off their small shoulders and mine. Where they are anxious, give them peace. Where they are tired, give them rest. Where they have done wrong, forgive them and help them forgive others, and let them wake tomorrow with a clean slate in your sight.
Watch over them through the night. Guard their sleep and their hearts, and keep away every fear that would whisper in the dark. Surround them with your protection, and when they wake, let them find you already near. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, my children are yours tonight. Quiet their worries, forgive what needs forgiving, and give them rest. Keep them safe in their sleep and remind them they are loved. Let them wake knowing you were with them through the night. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Pray this over your children as they lie down, asking God to give them the rest that only he can provide. It reminds them, and you, that safety does not depend on how well they guard themselves.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
Use this verse to thank God that he gives sleep to his beloved, and to release your worry about whether your children are carrying more than they should. Ask him to let them rest in him.
Isaiah 26:3
You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.
(WEB)
Pray this for a child whose mind is racing at night. Ask God to keep their thoughts settled on him, so that peace can settle in where anxiety has been.
Psalm 91:4
He will cover you with his feathers. Under his wings you will take refuge. His faithfulness is your shield and rampart.
(WEB)
Speak this verse over your children as an image of God’s protection. Picture his care as a shelter they can rest within, and ask him to keep them close through the night.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Pray this for the worries your children have named and the ones they have not. Ask God to guard their hearts and minds in Christ, so that prayer becomes their first response rather than fear.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a regular moment each evening, such as after brushing teeth or just before lights out, so the prayer becomes a settled rhythm rather than an occasional event. If you have a younger child, you might rest a hand on their back or hold their feet while you pray. Older children may prefer that you pray quietly in the hallway, or that they join in by saying the last word of each line.
Consider inviting a spouse, grandparent, or friend to pray the same words for your children on the nights you are apart. Some families take turns praying one line each, which teaches children that faith is shared. Keep a small notebook by the bed and jot down what you prayed about, so you can return to it when you see answers or when new concerns arise.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless your children and keep them through the night. May his face shine on them and his peace settle over their hearts. May they wake refreshed, loved, and ready for the day God has prepared for them.
