This evening prayer is for the end of a day when a relationship has been strained, broken or left unresolved, and you want to hand it to God before you rest. Pray it at bedtime, after the house is quiet, or whenever the day’s conflict is still weighing on you. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Evening Prayer for Restored Relationships

Lord, the day is ending, and I am bringing you the relationship that has been on my mind. You know the words that were said and the ones I wish I had not said. You know the silence that has settled between us and the hurt that is still tender. I confess my part in it, the pride, the impatience, the times I wanted to be right more than I wanted peace. Forgive me, and help me see where I need to change.

I also ask you to work in the heart of the other person. Soften what has grown hard in them, and give them rest tonight from whatever they carry about me or about us. If reconciliation is your will, open the way to honest conversation when the time is right, and give me patience to wait for it. If there are boundaries that need to stay in place for safety, show me that clearly too. Guard my tongue and my thoughts so I do not rehearse old arguments in the dark.

Tonight, I release the outcome to you. I do not have to fix everything before morning. Keep both of us under your care while we sleep, and let your mercy meet us tomorrow with something new. Thank you for the people you have given me and for your faithfulness that does not end when a day does. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired, and this relationship is still heavy on my heart. Forgive what I have done wrong today, and help me forgive what was done to me. Soften the other person’s heart and mine, and give us both rest tonight. I trust you with what I cannot repair on my own. Keep us in your peace until morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 139:23-24

23 Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. 24 See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.

(WEB)

Pray this before you ask God to change anyone else. It invites him to search your motives and expose any bitterness or pride that has kept the relationship strained. End the prayer by asking him to lead you in the way that is right.

Ephesians 4:31-32

31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and name the specific resentments you are holding tonight. Ask God to help you let them go, and to shape your words toward the other person in kindness. Use it as a guide for the forgiveness you are asking for.

Romans 12:18

If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

(WEB)

Pray this with the honest recognition that peace depends partly on what is within your control. Ask God to show you what your part is, and to give you the courage to take it without pretending the other person has no role to play.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

When a relationship feels beyond repair, this passage reminds you that God’s mercy is renewed each morning. Thank him for that steady faithfulness, and ask him to let his new mercies reach the relationship you are praying for.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Pray this as an act of trust, bringing to God the wrong you are finding hard to release. Ask him to help you bear with the other person and to forgive as fully as you have been forgiven, even when the feeling has not caught up yet.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a set time each evening, such as after you turn off the lights or while you wash up from dinner, so the habit has a natural place in your day. A notebook beside your bed can help. Write down the names of the people you are praying for and the specific things that need to be healed, then read the prayer aloud while your hand rests on the page.

If you share a home or a bed with the person, you might pray this quietly on your own, or ask them whether they would like to pray with you on another night. A trusted friend, a spouse, or a small group can also pray this alongside you, holding the relationship in their prayers when you are too worn out to find the words.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep watch over this relationship while you both sleep. May he soften every hard place, quiet every anxious thought, and give rest to the one who is carrying this burden tonight. May his peace guard your hearts and lead you toward a new morning.
