This short prayer for a teachable spirit is written for the moments when you sense you have stopped listening, whether to God, to a spouse, a mentor, or the people you lead. Pray it when you feel certain you already know the answer, when correction stings, or at the start of a day when you want to learn. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in place of mine.

Short Prayer for a Teachable Spirit

Lord, I come to you aware of how quickly I close my mind. I defend my opinions before I have heard the other side, and I bristle when someone points out a mistake I would rather not see. Soften my heart so that I can receive instruction without shame making me hard. Help me to ask good questions and then actually wait for the answers.

Teach me to hear you in Scripture, in prayer, and through the wise people you have placed around me. When I am tempted to say “I already know that,” remind me that I have a great deal left to learn. Give me the humility of a child who is glad to be shown the way, and keep my pride from standing between me and your truth.

Father, I want to grow, not just look like I have grown. Make me slow to speak and quick to listen, and let my first response to correction be gratitude rather than defense. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, quiet the part of me that wants to be right. Open my ears to what you are saying, whether it comes through your Word, a friend, or a difficult moment. Help me receive correction with thanks and not resentment. Make me willing to learn today, and let your truth reach me before my pride can answer. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 9:9

Instruct a wise man, and he will be still wiser. Teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you are tempted to resist a rebuke. Ask God to make you the kind of person who grows wiser when someone speaks truth into your life.

James 1:19

So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger…

(WEB)

Use this verse to slow your reactions. Ask God to give you the discipline to hear fully before you respond, especially in conversations where you feel the urge to argue.

Psalm 25:4-5

4 Show me your ways, the LORD. Teach me your paths. 5 Guide me in your truth, and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation, I wait for you all day long.

(WEB)

Pray this psalm as a request to be taught. David asks God to show him his ways and lead him in truth, and you can make the same request for your own daily decisions.

Proverbs 1:5

That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel…

(WEB)

This verse links wisdom with listening. Pray it as a reminder that even a person who is already wise keeps learning, and ask God to keep your mind open to instruction.

Philippians 2:3

Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself…

(WEB)

Pray this verse when pride is driving your opinions. Ask God to help you value others above yourself, which makes it far easier to receive what they have to teach you.

How to Pray This Prayer

A helpful time to pray this prayer is early in the morning, before the noise of email, messages, and meetings fills your attention. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of coffee or tea, and read the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let it sink in. If you have a notebook, write down one area where you have been resisting correction and bring that specific situation to God.

You might also pray this prayer with someone you trust, such as a spouse, a small group leader, or a close friend. Ask them to pray it with you and to tell you honestly where they see your listening getting hard. Having another person beside you makes it easier to stay humble and open over time.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you an ear that is quick to hear and a heart that is glad to learn. May he remove the pride that makes you defensive and fill you with the patience to listen well. As you seek wisdom, may he lead you step by step into all that is true.
