This short prayer is for anyone heading out on a trip, whether that means a commute, a long drive, a flight, or a move to a new place. It asks God for safety, clear thinking, and peace for the people you love who are going with you or staying behind. Pray it before you leave, while you wait at a terminal, or as you buckle your seatbelt. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own worries in your own words.

Short Prayer for Those Traveling

Lord, thank you for the gift of getting from one place to another. Be with us on this road, in this car, on this plane, or on this train. Watch over the driver’s attention, the pilot’s decisions, and the hands on every wheel and every engine we will pass along the way. Keep us alert but not anxious, careful but not afraid. Where there is traffic, slow us down. Where there is a delay, give us patience instead of anger. Where there is an unknown turn ahead, remind us that you already know the way.

We also bring you the people we are leaving behind. Hold them while we are away. Give them rest, good sleep, and a sense of your nearness in our absence. And for those we are going to see, prepare their hearts for our arrival. Let this trip do good in us and through us, and bring us home safely to the people who are waiting for us. Thank you for going ahead of us and for walking with us the whole way. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, keep us safe on this journey. Guard our bodies, our minds, and our hearts as we go. Give us calm in the rush and wisdom in every choice. Bring us where we need to be, and bring us home again. We trust you with every mile between here and there. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

This verse promises that God watches over your going out and your coming in. Pray it as you leave the house, and again when you return. It turns a single trip into a reminder that every departure and arrival is held in his care.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Psalm 91 speaks of God giving his angels charge over the one who trusts him. Pray this verse over the people traveling with you, naming them one by one. It gives your fear a specific, hopeful direction.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When plans shift, missed connections or detours can feel like failure. Pray this passage asking God to make your paths straight, even when the route looks crooked. It helps you release the need to control every detail.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

Isaiah speaks to a people facing danger and promises that God will be with them through waters and fire. Pray it for any stretch of the journey that feels frightening, such as a rough crossing or a stretch of unfamiliar road.

Psalm 107:30

Then they are glad because it is calm, so he brings them to their desired haven.

(WEB)

This verse describes sailors in a storm who are brought safely to their harbor. Pray it for those whose travel involves water, wind, or weather, asking God to lead every traveler to the place they are meant to reach.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer before you turn the key, open the car door, or step into the boarding line. Take a slow breath, hold the car keys, the ticket, or the bag strap in your hands, and let the physical act remind you of what you are entrusting to God. If you are driving, you might pray the shorter version at each stop sign or red light. If you are flying, pray it quietly when the engines start to roar.

If others are traveling with you, invite them to join in. Ask a spouse, child, or friend to pray one line each, or hold hands and speak the prayer together. Anyone who is staying behind can pray it too, lifting the travelers up at the same hour so that everyone shares in the journey.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you, beside you, and behind you on every road. May he keep your steps steady and your heart at rest. May you arrive where you are headed with a grateful spirit, and may you return home to those who love you, carrying his peace with you every mile of the way.
