An evening prayer for the day ahead is a way to hand over tomorrow before you fall asleep, asking God to go before you into the hours still unseen. Pray it at bedtime, after the last light is off or while you sit on the edge of the bed with your phone set aside. It can be read aloud exactly as written, or you can use its phrases as a starting point and pray in your own words.

Evening Prayer for the Day Ahead

Lord, the day is ending and I bring it to you as it is: the parts that went well, the parts that wore me out, and the conversations I would like to replay. Thank you for the meals, the work I was able to do, and the small kindnesses that came my way when I did not expect them. Forgive me for the impatience, the worry I carried that was not mine to carry, and the moments I forgot you were near.

Now I give you tomorrow, which I cannot see and cannot control. I think about the alarm, the commute, the inbox, the children who need to be fed and dropped off, the call I have been dreading, and the people whose health or grief I am holding. Go ahead of me into each of those hours. Make my mind clear enough to decide well, my hands steady enough to do the work in front of me, and my tongue slow enough to speak with grace. Where I will feel afraid, be the one who steadies me. Where I will feel alone, let me sense your presence without needing to see it.

Guard my sleep tonight. Quiet the thoughts that circle back to what I could not fix today. Let my body rest and my heart trust that you do not sleep, and that you are awake over my home, my family, and the people I love while I close my eyes. I release the day into your hands and receive the new morning as a gift. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and the day is done. I give you what went wrong and what went right, and I ask you to walk with me into tomorrow. Keep me steady when I am anxious, patient when I am stretched thin, and aware that you are near. Let me sleep in your peace and wake ready to receive what you give. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you lie down, letting the promise of safe sleep become your own prayer. Thank God that rest is possible because he is the one who keeps watch.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release the pressure to finish everything. Ask God to remind you that your worth and provision do not depend on how much you got done today.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this as you anticipate the morning. Ask for fresh mercy to meet you when you wake, and thank him for a faithfulness that does not run out overnight.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Bring the people you are worried about into this prayer. Ask God to keep watch over them while you sleep, since he neither slumbers nor sleeps.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Turn your attention toward the one you trust as you let go of the day’s details. Ask God to fix your mind on him so that the restless thoughts can settle.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed point in your evening, perhaps right after you brush your teeth or before you plug in your phone to charge across the room. Sit on the edge of the bed or stand by the window with the lights dimmed, and keep a small notebook nearby if you want to write down the tasks that keep surfacing. Naming them on paper can help you leave them there for the night.

If you share a home, you can pray this prayer aloud with a spouse, a roommate, or a child old enough to join in. Take turns saying one line each, then end together with the word Amen. Families with young children might fold the prayer into bedtime and let each child name one thing they are glad about from the day.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over your going out and your coming in hold you through this night and meet you in the morning. May your sleep be deep, your worries be set down, and your heart be lighter when you wake than when you lay down.
