This evening prayer is for the journey ahead, whether that journey is a new season of work, a long drive or flight tomorrow, a move, a hard conversation, or simply the unknown road of the coming days. Pray it at the end of the day, once the lights are low and the day’s noise has settled. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where they fit better.
Evening Prayer for the Journey Ahead
Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. Some of it went well, and some of it left me tired, short-tempered, or unsure. Thank you for the small mercies I can name tonight: the meal that was enough, the person who called, the moment of quiet I did not expect. Forgive me for the things I carried today that were never mine to hold. I set them down now, one by one, and ask you to take them.
Tomorrow and the days after it feel long from here. I do not know every turn in the road, and some of what lies ahead makes my stomach tighten. Go before me into those hours. Steady my plans where they are sound, and loosen my grip where they are only fear wearing the clothes of wisdom. Keep me safe on the roads, in the rooms I will enter, and in the conversations I dread. Guard my family and the people I love while I sleep, and give them rest too.
Let me wake tomorrow already a little lighter, because you have gone ahead of me. Give me enough strength for the next step and not a burden for the whole distance. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am tired and the road ahead feels longer than I can see. Take what I have carried today and keep me through the night. Go before me into tomorrow, steady my heart, and guard the people I love while I rest. Give me enough for the next step only. Thank you for being near. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 121:7-8
7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.
(WEB)
Read this slowly before you close your eyes. Ask the Lord to keep your going and your coming, not only tomorrow but through the whole stretch ahead, and let the promise of his watchfulness settle what the journey has unsettled.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
This verse names the peace that comes from trusting God with the night. Pray it over your body and your mind, asking for sleep that is restful rather than anxious, and thank him that safety does not depend on your staying awake.
Isaiah 43:2
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.
(WEB)
Use this promise for the hard stretches on the road. Name the waters or fires you fear, and pray that God would be with you in them, not as a promise that nothing hard will come, but that you will not be left alone inside it.
Matthew 11:28-30
28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
(WEB)
Bring your weariness to Jesus in the same words he used. Pray that you would learn to rest in him instead of carrying the whole weight of tomorrow on your own shoulders, and ask him to make the load lighter as you walk.
Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
(WEB)
This verse was written in a time of ruin, which makes it a faithful companion for an uncertain evening. Thank God that his mercies are renewed each morning, and ask him to meet you at dawn with fresh strength for whatever the day holds.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer at the close of the day, once you are in bed or in a quiet chair with the lights dimmed. Keep your phone away and, if you can, rest your hands open on your lap or your knees, as a physical reminder that you are setting the day down. Speak the words aloud if you are able, even softly, because hearing your own voice often slows the racing thoughts.
If you share a home, invite someone to pray it with you, or pray it for them by name in the places where the journey is theirs too. A spouse, a child, a friend who is traveling or facing the same change can be lifted up with the same words. Let the prayer become a habit you return to whenever the next season begins.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over you tonight also walk ahead of you tomorrow. May he guard your going out and your coming in, give you rest that restores, and meet you with fresh mercy at the first light of morning. Go in peace, and be held.
