This evening prayer is for anyone who is sleeping away from home tonight, whether in a dorm, a hotel, a hospital, a barracks, a friend’s spare room, or a house that does not yet feel like yours. Pray it at bedtime, once the day’s noise has settled, and read it aloud exactly as written or use it as a starting point for words of your own.
Evening Prayer for Those Away From Home
Lord, the day is ending and I am not where I usually sleep. The bed feels strange, the sounds outside are unfamiliar, and some part of me is still looking for the familiar things: the particular creak of a floorboard, the voice of someone I love down the hall, the sense that I know where I am. I bring that restlessness to you. You know every place I have traveled today and every place I will wake tomorrow, and nothing about this room is hidden from you.
I release the day into your hands. I give you the worries I carried home with me, the conversations that did not go well, the bills or deadlines or distances that weigh on my mind tonight. Quiet my thoughts so that I can rest instead of rehearsing. Where I feel lonely, remind me that I am not forgotten, and that the people who love me are still held in your care even when we are apart. Protect my family and friends tonight, especially those who are traveling, working late, or lying awake for their own reasons.
Keep watch over me while I sleep. Guard the door and the window, and guard my heart from fear. Thank you for the roof over my head, for the people who welcomed me, and for the ordinary mercies of this day that I may have overlooked. Let me wake tomorrow knowing that wherever I am, you are already there. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am far from home tonight and it is hard to settle. Take the unease from my body and the worry from my mind. Be with the people I miss, and be with the people who are missing me. Keep me safe through the dark hours, and let me wake knowing you have been near all night. Thank you for today. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

Read this slowly as you lie down, letting each phrase settle before you move on. Pray it as a statement of trust, asking God to let you sleep in that same peace even in an unfamiliar bed.
Psalm 121:3-4
3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
(WEB)
Use this verse to pray for the watchfulness of God over you while you sleep. Name the places and people where you feel unguarded tonight, and ask him to keep watch over each one.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
This verse speaks to the exhaustion that comes with a long day. Bring your work, your plans, and your worries to God, and ask him to give you real rest rather than just a closed door.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Take this invitation personally tonight. Tell Jesus which burden you are carrying into the night, and ask him to take it from you so that you can lie down without carrying it.
Isaiah 26:3
You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.
(WEB)
Pray this verse for a mind that will not slow down. Ask God to keep your thoughts fixed on him rather than on what you cannot control while you are far from home.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try to pray this at the same point each evening, once you have turned off the lights or put down your phone. Sitting on the edge of the bed with your feet on the floor can help your body understand that the day is ending. If you have a small object from home, such as a photograph, a ring, or a worn book, hold it in your hands as you pray and let it remind you that the people and places you love still exist.
You can also invite someone else to pray it with you, even by phone or video call. A parent, a spouse, a close friend, or a church member in your home town can say the prayer aloud while you listen, or each of you can pray one paragraph. Hearing another voice ask God to watch over you on the other end of a line can make the distance feel smaller, and it reminds you that you are carried by a wider family of prayer.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over you through the night grant you rest that is deeper than the strangeness of this room. May he hold the people you love in the same faithful care he gives you, and may you wake to find that his presence has gone before you into the day ahead.
