This evening prayer is for anyone who is traveling, whether you are on the road home after a long day, sitting in an airport waiting to board, or lying down in a hotel bed far from your own. It is meant to be prayed at the end of the day, once you have stopped moving or are about to, and it can be read aloud exactly as written or used as a starting point for your own words.

Evening Prayer for Those Traveling

Lord, the day is ending, and I am grateful that you have carried me through it. I thank you for the safe miles, for the drivers who gave us room, for the pilots and conductors and mechanics who did their work well, and for every small kindness along the way. I thank you for the roads and rails and sky that bring people home to the ones they love. Tonight I give you the tiredness in my body and the restlessness that comes from being somewhere unfamiliar. Settle my mind the way you settle the waters, and let me rest without carrying the whole journey in my head.

I ask for protection through the night and for the morning ahead. Watch over those who are still driving, flying or sailing, and over those who must wake early to get on the road again. Keep the hotel, the friend’s couch, or the borrowed bed a place of peace for my family and me. Where worry about delays, money, or what waits at the other end has crept in, take it from my hands. Help me remember that you go before me into every place I have not yet seen. I trust you with the next stretch of the road.

Thank you for being near when I am far from home. Let my sleep be sound and my heart be quiet, and let me wake refreshed to whatever comes. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, thank you for getting us this far. Keep us safe through the dark hours, calm the worry we feel about being away, and bring us home when the journey is finished. Give us rest tonight and a steady heart for tomorrow. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly when you feel exposed or uneasy in a strange place. Ask the Lord to guard your going out and your coming in, and let the promise remind you that your movements are never outside his care.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse is a bedtime prayer in itself. Read it aloud as you lie down, and let it turn your thoughts from the road to the safety of God, who lets you rest even when you are not at home.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray for angelic protection over those still traveling, naming each person by name. It reminds us that God’s care reaches into ordinary journeys, not only dramatic ones.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

Bring this promise to God when a trip has been hard or a fear about the road is pressing on you. Thank him for walking with you through water and fire, and ask for courage to trust his presence through whatever lies ahead.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you are weary from the day’s travel and the burden of getting everywhere feels heavy. Name the weariness honestly and receive Jesus’ invitation to come to him for rest.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer once you have finished the last leg of the day, whether that means parking the car, closing the hotel room door, or settling into your seat for the night train. Sit or kneel somewhere quiet, and if your hands need something to do, hold a bag strap, a boarding pass, or the edge of the bed while you speak. Let the physical stillness mark the moment as the end of the travel.

You can also pray this for a family member, a friend, or a colleague who is still on the way. Read it aloud with them on the phone before they sleep, changing “me” to their name where it fits. Traveling families often find that a shared prayer at the end of a long day helps everyone feel connected even when they are far apart.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep you as you rest and go before you on every road still ahead. May his peace settle over you tonight, and may you wake to find that you were never traveling alone.
