This lesson teaches children that God keeps His promises, even when His people have made big mistakes. It is designed for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach, including the story, discussion, and activity.

Big Idea

God promises to make His people clean and to give them new hearts so they can love and follow Him. God does what He says, and He keeps His word.

Memory Verse

Ezekiel 36:26

I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.

(WEB)

Teach children to place one hand on their chest, then tap it twice slowly as they say the words together. Repeat it three times, getting softer each time, so the children learn it by heart.

The Story: Ezekiel 36 for Kids

God chose a man named Ezekiel to speak His messages to the people of Israel. Israel was God’s own land, but the people had not been living the way God wanted. They had turned to idols and done many wrong things. Because of this, God let other nations take their land and scatter the people far away.

Some of the nations around Israel laughed at the land and said it belonged to them now. God heard all of this, and He was not pleased with how His land had been treated. God told Ezekiel to speak to the mountains and hills of Israel. He said, “I am coming to you, and you will be tilled and sown again.”

God then made a big promise to His people. He said He would bring them back home from all the countries where they had been scattered. Ezekiel heard God say, “I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean.” God would wash away all the dirt of their sin and the idols they had worshiped.

God also promised something even more wonderful. He said, “I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you.” Their hard, stony hearts would become soft hearts that could love Him. God would put His own Spirit inside them so they could walk in His ways.

In the end, God said the cities would be rebuilt and the empty land would grow full of food. The people would look around and say, “This land is like the garden of Eden!” God told them that they would know He was the LORD, because He does what He says.

Read It Together

Ezekiel 36:9-10

9 For, behold, I am for you, and I will come to you, and you will be tilled and sown. 10 I will multiply men on you, all the house of Israel, even all of it. The cities will be inhabited, and the waste places will be built.

Point out that God says, “I am for you.” Ask the children to notice how God is the one who starts the good work of making things new. Help them see that God’s love comes first.

Ezekiel 36:25

I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your filthiness, and from all your idols.

(WEB)

Show the children how God uses the word “clean” to describe what He will do for His people. Explain that God washes away wrong things so we can be made new. Let them know God is willing to cleanse anyone who turns to Him.

Ezekiel 36:28

You will dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers. You will be my people, and I will be your God.

(WEB)

Point out the words “You will be my people, and I will be your God.” Explain that this is a promise of belonging. God wants to be close to His people and to care for them.

Talk About It

  • What did God promise to do with the dirty hearts of His people, and how would that change them?
  • Why do you think God wanted to clean up His people instead of leaving them the way they were?
  • What does it feel like when someone keeps a promise to you, and how does that show you can trust them?
  • How can we ask God to give us a soft heart that wants to love Him and others?
  • What is one thing you could do this week to show God you want to follow Him?

Activity Ideas

Clean Heart Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw a big heart on the paper and color it bright red. Then have them draw sparkly water drops falling on the heart to show God making it clean and new. Let the children share their pictures and explain what the water means.

Stone to Soft Heart Relay

You will need a few small rocks and a soft cloth or sponge for each team. Split the children into two teams and set up a short relay course across the room. Each child carries a rock on a spoon or in their hand to the finish line, then passes it on. At the end, give each child a soft sponge and let them talk about how God changes hard hearts into soft ones.

Take-Home Promise Card

You will need index cards, a pen, and a sticker or a small piece of tape. Have each child write or draw one way God keeps His promises, such as “God makes me clean.” Let them decorate the card and take it home. Encourage them to read it with their family during the week.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God acts out of His own holy name and His faithfulness, not because His people deserve it. The promise of a new heart and the gift of God’s Spirit point forward to the way God renews His people. Adults can see God’s patient love in the way He restores what sin broke.

When teaching children, avoid making the lesson sound like they must earn God’s cleansing by behaving well first. The chapter stresses that God is the one who cleans and renews, so keep the focus on God’s action and not on the children’s performance.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You for keeping Your promises to us. Please wash away our wrong ways and give us hearts that love You. Help us walk in Your ways each day and trust that You always do what You say. Amen.
