This lesson teaches children that God gives grace to people who are humble, and that they can draw near to him through honest, humble hearts. It suits children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including a short story, a memory verse, and one simple activity.

Big Idea

God is close to people who humble themselves and ask him for help. When we are proud or grumpy, we can say sorry and come back to God, and he always welcomes us.

Memory Verse

James 4:8

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

(WEB)

Put one hand on your heart and slowly reach the other hand toward the ceiling, as if you are reaching up to God. Bring your hands back to your heart as you say the words together. Repeat it three times, moving a little slower each time.

The Story: James 4 for Kids

Long ago, a man named James wrote a letter to friends who believed in Jesus. He noticed that some of them were fighting with each other. Some wanted things so badly that they grabbed them, and some argued until voices got loud and angry. James wanted them to understand that these fights came from wanting things for themselves.

James reminded them that friendship with the world can pull our hearts away from God. He said that God does not want us to be proud. Instead, God gives special kindness to people who are humble. James wrote a line that means God opposes proud people but gives grace to those who are humble.

Then James gave them a clear way to come back to God. He told them to submit to God and to resist the devil, who would then run away from them. He said, “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” James asked them to clean up their hands and hearts, because God wants our hearts to be honest and whole.

James also said something surprising. He told his friends not to speak against each other or judge one another. He reminded them that God alone is the one who judges, and that God is able to save. James wanted his friends to remember that they are not in charge of everything.

Finally, James told them not to brag about their plans for tomorrow. He said that life is like a little mist that appears for a moment and then is gone. Instead of boasting, he taught them to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”

Read It Together

James 4:6

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

Point out the word “gives” and ask children what God gives to humble people. Explain that grace means God’s kindness, which we never have to earn. Remind them that being humble means being honest that we need God’s help.

James 4:7-8

7 Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Show children the steps in these verses: submit to God, resist the devil, and draw near to God. Act out each step with a simple movement. Emphasize that when we come close to God, he comes close to us.

James 4:10

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

(WEB)

Ask children what it looks like to humble ourselves, such as saying sorry or letting someone else go first. Point out that God is the one who lifts us up. Explain that we do not have to make ourselves important, because God takes care of that.

Talk About It

  • What is one thing that makes people fight with each other, and how can we stop it?
  • What does it mean to draw near to God, and how can we do that during our day?
  • Why do you think God gives special kindness to people who are humble?
  • When is it hard for you to say sorry, and what helps you do it?
  • How can we remember that God is the one who judges and that we can trust him?

Activity Ideas

Heart and Hands Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Have each child trace one of their hands on the paper, then draw a heart in the middle of the palm. Ask them to write or draw one way they can draw near to God this week. Hang the pictures where the family can see them.

Humble Steps Movement Game

You will need an open space and a few chairs. Call out the steps from James 4:7-8 and have children act them out: bow low for humble, reach up for draw near, and wave their hands away for resist. Let them take turns leading the movements. Finish by having everyone sit quietly with their hands folded.

Take-Home Thank You Card

You will need a sheet of paper for each child and some stickers or crayons. Ask each child to fold the paper in half and write or draw a thank you note to God for his kindness. Encourage them to bring the card home and read it to a family member at dinner. This helps the lesson continue beyond class.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that pride and selfish desires are at the root of conflict, and that God calls his people to humility, honest repentance, and trust in his wisdom. It also warns against judging others and boasting about the future, reminding us that God alone rules over life and death.

When teaching children, avoid making the lesson about fear or about being punished for every mistake. Focus instead on God’s kindness and his invitation to come close, so children feel welcomed rather than afraid.

A Prayer to Close

Dear Lord, thank you for your kindness, which you give to people who are humble. Help us to be honest about our hearts and to say sorry when we are wrong. Teach us to draw near to you each day, knowing that you are always close to us. We trust you with our lives and our plans. Amen.
