In this lesson, children learn that God’s river of life flows from His house and brings healing and life everywhere it goes. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God gives life and healing. Wherever His river flows, things grow and come alive, and the water never runs out.
Memory Verse
Ezekiel 47:9
It will happen, that every living creature which swarms, in every place where the rivers come, will live. Then there will be a very great multitude of fish; for these waters have come there, and the waters of the sea will be healed, and everything will live wherever the river comes.

Have children stand up and wave their arms like flowing water while they say the verse together. Then have them put their hands on their hearts and say “everything will live” with a big smile. Repeat it three times, faster each time.
The Story: Ezekiel 47 for Kids
One day the prophet Ezekiel was taken back to the door of the Temple in Jerusalem. He saw water coming out from under the threshold, and it was flowing toward the east. The water was small at first, but it kept growing as it moved along.
A man with a measuring line walked ahead of Ezekiel and measured the water every thousand steps. At the first measure, the water was up to Ezekiel’s ankles. At the second, it was up to his knees. At the third, it reached his waist.
At the fourth measure, the water was too deep to walk through. It was a big river, deep enough for swimming. The man asked Ezekiel, “Son of man, have you seen this?” Ezekiel saw that the river was full of life and healing.
Along both banks of the river, trees began to grow. The man said the water would flow into the Dead Sea, and the salty water there would become fresh. Fish would swim everywhere the river went, and fishermen would stand by to catch them.
The trees had leaves that never dried up, and they gave fresh fruit every month. The fruit was for food, and the leaves were for healing. God’s river brought life to every place it touched.
Read It Together
Ezekiel 47:1
He brought me back to the door of the house; and behold, waters flowed out from under the threshold of the house eastward, for the front of the house faced toward the east. The waters came down from underneath, from the right side of the house, on the south of the altar.

Point out that the water started at the Temple door, which is where God’s people met with Him. Ask children where they think the water came from, and help them see that God is the source of life.
Ezekiel 47:3-5
3 When the man went out eastward with the line in his hand, he measured one thousand cubits, and he caused me to pass through the waters, waters that were to the ankles. 4 Again he measured one thousand, and caused me to pass through the waters, waters that were to the knees. Again he measured one thousand, and caused me to pass through waters that were to the waist. 5 Afterward he measured one thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass through; for the waters had risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be walked through.

Show how the water grew deeper step by step, from ankles to knees to waist to deep water. Explain that God’s blessings can grow bigger and bigger, and they never run out.
Ezekiel 47:12
By the river on its bank, on this side and on that side, will grow every tree for food, whose leaf won’t wither, neither will its fruit fail. It will produce new fruit every month, because its waters issue out of the sanctuary. Its fruit will be for food, and its leaf for healing.”

Point to the trees that grew along the river and the fresh fruit they gave every month. Remind children that God takes care of His people and gives them everything they need.
Talk About It
- What did the water do wherever it flowed?
- Why do you think the water started at the Temple door?
- What is something in your world that God has made to grow and come alive?
- How does it feel to know God’s river of life never stops flowing?
- How can we share God’s life and kindness with the people around us?
Activity Ideas
Paint a River of Life Picture
You will need paper, blue and green paint or crayons, and cotton swabs. Have children paint a wide blue river curving across the paper. Then dab green trees along both banks using the cotton swabs. Let them add fish and fruit as they like, and talk about how God’s river brings life everywhere.
Wade Through the River Game
Mark a long line on the floor with tape, and place pieces of blue paper or a blue towel along it. Have children walk slowly from one end to the other, pretending the water gets deeper, from ankles to knees to waist. Let them stop and say, “God’s river gives life!” at each step.
Growing Fruit Take-Home
You will need a paper cup, potting soil, and a few bean seeds. Help each child fill a cup with soil, plant a seed, and water it. Explain that just like the trees by God’s river, the plant grows because of water and God’s gift of life. Encourage them to water it each day and watch it grow at home.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this passage paints a picture of God as the source of life, healing, and blessing. The river grows deeper as it flows out from the Temple, showing that God’s grace is abundant and reaches far beyond its starting point. The promise of healing for the salty waters points to renewal that God brings to what seems lost.
Avoid overstating the details of the land borders and measurements to children. Keep the focus on the river, the trees, and God’s life-giving care, since the boundary lists are far less useful for young learners.
A Prayer to Close
Father, thank You that You are the source of all life. Thank You for the river that grows and brings healing wherever it goes. Help us to trust You, to share Your kindness, and to remember that Your blessings never run out. Amen.
