Hebrews 6 teaches children that God always keeps His promises, and that we can hold onto His promises like an anchor, even when things feel scary or hard. This lesson is written for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God always keeps His promises, and we can trust Him to hold us steady like an anchor on a stormy sea.

Memory Verse

Hebrews 6:19

This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and entering into that which is within the veil…

(WEB)

Hold both hands out in front of you, palms together, then pull them down slowly to your chest like you are dropping a heavy anchor. Say the words “anchor of the soul” as you do it, and remind children that God’s promises keep us steady.

The Story: Hebrews 6 for Kids

Long ago, God’s people were learning many important things about Jesus. The writer of this letter wanted them to keep growing in their faith. He wanted them to be like a field that gets rain and grows good plants, not a field that only grows thorns and weeds. He hoped they would keep loving God and helping other believers.

Then the writer pointed to Abraham, a man who waited a long time for God’s promise. God had promised Abraham that He would bless him and give him many children. Abraham waited patiently, and he did not give up on God. Some years passed, but God never forgot what He had said.

God wanted Abraham to know for sure that His promise would happen. Since God is greater than anyone, He made a promise and swore by Himself. God cannot lie, so His promise is completely true. Imagine Abraham hearing God say, “Surely I will bless you.” Abraham could hold on to that promise with all his heart.

The writer explained that we can trust God’s promises too. Because God does not change, we have strong encouragement when we feel afraid. Our hope in Jesus is like an anchor for our soul. An anchor keeps a boat from drifting away in the wind and waves, and God’s promises keep our hearts steady.

Jesus went before us into heaven as our High Priest, and He is always caring for us. We never have to be alone when we hold onto Him. God’s love and faithfulness are always with His children.

Read It Together

Hebrews 6:13-15

13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself, 14 saying, “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” 15 Thus, having patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

Point out that God made a promise to Abraham and that Abraham waited patiently. Ask children what it might feel like to wait a long time for something God promised. Explain that God keeps every word He speaks.

Hebrews 6:17-18

17 In this way God, being determined to show more abundantly to the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, interposed with an oath; 18 that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have a strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to take hold of the hope set before us.

Show children that God wanted to make His promise very clear. Explain that God cannot lie, so we can have a strong encouragement when we need it. Help them see that trusting God brings comfort.

Hebrews 6:10

For God is not unrighteous, so as to forget your work and the labor of love which you showed toward his name, in that you served the saints, and still do serve them.

(WEB)

Point out that God notices the kind things we do for others, even small ones. Tell children that God remembers their love and helping hands. Encourage them to see that serving others is important to God.

Talk About It

  • What is something God has promised us in the Bible that makes you feel safe?
  • Why do you think Abraham kept trusting God even when he had to wait a long time?
  • How is God’s promise like an anchor for a boat?
  • What is one way you can show love to someone in your church or family this week?
  • When you feel scared or worried, what can you remember about God to help you feel steady?

Activity Ideas

Paper Anchor Craft

You will need construction paper, markers, scissors, glue, and a piece of string or yarn. Have children draw a large anchor shape on paper and cut it out. Let them write “God keeps His promises” on the anchor in bright colors. Glue a loop of string to the top so they can hang it in their room as a reminder of God’s faithfulness.

Anchor Pose Game

Clear a space in the room where children can move around freely. Call out “Storm!” and have children wobble and sway like boats on rough water. Then call out “Anchor!” and have them freeze, stand tall, and hold both hands together in front of their chest. Play several rounds and talk about how God keeps us steady in every storm.

Promise Keeper Card

You will need index cards, crayons, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw a picture of something God has promised, such as His love, His presence, or His care. On the back, have them write or draw one way they can trust God this week. Encourage children to take the card home and place it somewhere they will see it each day.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter reminds us that God’s promises are sure because He does not change and cannot lie. The writer encourages believers to keep growing in faith, to show love and diligence, and to hold onto the hope we have in Jesus. Christians can rest in the steady anchor of God’s faithfulness, even when life feels uncertain.

When teaching children, avoid making the warning passage about falling away sound frightening or suggesting that God might abandon them. Focus instead on God’s faithfulness, His promises, and the encouragement He gives His people.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You that You always keep Your promises. Help us to hold onto You like an anchor when we feel scared or unsure. Teach us to show love to others and to trust You every day. We love You, and we know You will always be with us. Amen.
