This lesson teaches children that God welcomes us back when we turn away from Him, and that He loves us freely. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

When we do wrong and then turn back to God, He forgives us and loves us. God is always ready to welcome us home, and His love makes us grow like flowers in the sun.

Memory Verse

Hosea 14:4

“I will heal their waywardness. I will love them freely; for my anger is turned away from him.

(WEB)

Have the children cup their hands together in front of their chest, then slowly open them wide like a flower blooming. Say the words along with the motion, and repeat it three times so the children can say the idea without looking.

The Story: Hosea 14 for Kids

God’s people, Israel, had wandered far away from Him. They had worshiped idols made by their own hands, and they had trusted other nations to keep them safe. Their hearts had become cold, and their choices had led them into trouble.

God spoke through a prophet named Hosea. He told the people, “Come back to the LORD your God. You have fallen because of your sin.” The prophet reminded them that God was waiting for them with open arms, not with anger that never ends.

Hosea told them what to say when they came back. They were to ask God to forgive all their wrongs and to receive them with kindness. They promised that they would no longer trust their idols or horses to keep them safe, because God is the one who shows mercy to those who have no one else to help them.

Then God answered His people with a promise. He said, “I will heal their waywardness. I will love them freely, because My anger has turned away.” God compared His blessing to dew that falls on the ground and helps flowers, trees, and grain grow tall and strong.

God’s people would bloom like a lily, spread their branches like an olive tree, and grow strong like the grain and the vine. Everyone who lived under their shade would be refreshed and happy. God said He was like a green cypress tree, and that good fruit would come from Him.

The chapter ends by reminding everyone that God’s ways are right. The people who walk in them will be steady, but those who turn away from them will stumble and fall.

Read It Together

Hosea 14:1

Israel, return to the LORD your God; for you have fallen because of your sin.

(WEB)

Point out that God invites His people to return to Him. Ask the children what it means to come back to someone who loves them, and why it matters that the invitation comes from God Himself.

Hosea 14:5-6

5 I will be like the dew to Israel. He will blossom like the lily, and send down his roots like Lebanon. 6 His branches will spread, and his beauty will be like the olive tree, and his fragrance like Lebanon.

(WEB)

Show the children how God describes Himself as dew, a gentle and refreshing gift. Let them name plants they have seen grow, and connect those plants to the way God’s care helps His people grow.

Hosea 14:9

Who is wise, that he may understand these things? Who is prudent, that he may know them? For the ways of the LORD are right, and the righteous walk in them; But the rebellious stumble in them.

(WEB)

Explain that God’s ways are right and good, and that walking with Him keeps us safe. Ask the children to think of a path or a road they know well, and compare it to the path God shows us.

Talk About It

  • What did God’s people do that made them move away from Him?
  • How do you think God felt when His people came back to Him?
  • What are some things people sometimes trust instead of God?
  • How does God’s love for us help us feel brave when we make a mistake?
  • What is one way you can show God that you want to walk with Him each day?

Activity Ideas

Flower Garden Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw a small flower on the paper, then add a sun in the corner. Explain that God’s love is like sunlight and dew, helping us grow. Let the children color their flowers and write or draw one way they can grow closer to God.

Walk Home Game

You will need a open space in your room or yard and a few chairs. Set the chairs in a line to make a pretend path. Have the children start at one end and walk slowly to the other, saying “Come back to God” with each step. When they reach the end, cheer for them and remind everyone that God welcomes us home every time.

Take-Home Dew Jar

You will need a small jar, a piece of paper, and a marker. Write “God’s love is like dew” on the paper and place it inside the jar. Give the jar to each child to keep on a windowsill or desk. Encourage them to look at it each morning and remember that God’s care refreshes them every day.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God’s love is patient and faithful even when His people have strayed. Hosea speaks of Israel’s turning away from God through idolatry and misplaced trust, and God’s response is a call to return followed by a promise of healing and renewal. The chapter closes with a wisdom reminder that God’s ways are right, and that obedience leads to life while rebellion leads to stumbling.

When teaching children, avoid suggesting that God’s love depends on our perfect behavior. The chapter emphasizes God’s free and generous love, which He offers before we change. Be careful not to make the lesson sound like a formula for earning God’s favor, because His mercy is a gift that children can receive with joy.

A Prayer to Close

Lord, thank You for loving us and welcoming us home when we turn back to You. Help us to trust You every day and to grow strong like flowers in Your care. Thank You for forgiving us and showing us the right path. We love You. Amen.
