In this lesson, children learn that God will one day make everything right, and that we can trust Him instead of trusting ourselves. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
Big Idea
God is good and wise, and He teaches us to walk in His light instead of being proud or trusting in things that cannot help us.
Memory Verse
Isaiah 2:5
House of Jacob, come, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.
(WEB)
Hold your hands out in front of you, palms up, like you are receiving a gift. Then slowly bring them together over your heart. Say the verse together while you walk slowly in a circle, as if you are following a light.
The Story: Isaiah 2 for Kids
A long time ago, a prophet named Isaiah saw a vision about the city of Jerusalem and the people of Judah. He saw a day coming in the future when God’s house would be raised up above all the other hills. People from every nation would climb up that mountain to learn from God.
In that day, the people would say to one another, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD.” They wanted to learn God’s ways and walk in His paths. The people would not fight with each other anymore. They would take their swords and spears and turn them into tools for farming, so the soil could grow food.
But Isaiah also saw that God’s people had wandered away from Him. They had filled their land with silver, gold, horses, and chariots. They had even made statues of wood and metal and bowed down to them. They trusted their own hands more than the God who made them.
Isaiah told the people that God does not want us to be proud. Tall towers, strong walls, and fancy ships cannot save anyone. People who think they are very important will be brought low. God alone is the one who should be lifted up high.
Isaiah reminded everyone that people are like a breath in the nostrils. We are not strong enough to save ourselves. So he gave a simple command: stop trusting in people who are only here for a little while, and trust the Lord who lives forever.
Read It Together
Isaiah 2:2
It shall happen in the latter days, that the mountain of the LORD’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it.
(WEB)
Point out that the mountain of the LORD’s house is going to be higher than all the other hills. Explain that this is a picture of God being honored above everything else, and that all nations will come to Him.
Isaiah 2:4
He will judge between the nations, and will decide concerning many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
(WEB)
Show children how swords and spears can be changed into tools that help people grow food. Explain that God wants His people to live in peace and to use what they have to help others.
Isaiah 2:22
Stop trusting in man, whose breath is in his nostrils; for of what account is he?
(WEB)
Ask the children to look at how the verse calls people a breath in the nostrils. Help them see that nobody is strong enough to be our rescuer, and that God is the one we can always trust.
Talk About It
- What do you think it would be like to walk up a mountain with lots of people, all going to learn about God?
- Why do you think God wants us to put down our weapons and use our hands to help others?
- What are some things people sometimes trust in instead of God, and why can those things not save us?
- How can we tell when we are being proud, and what can we do to feel humble instead?
- When you feel scared, what is one thing you can remember about God being bigger than anything else?
Activity Ideas
Mountain and Light Craft
You will need construction paper, crayons or markers, scissors, and glue. Have each child draw a tall mountain on one piece of paper and a row of smaller hills on another. Glue the mountain on top of the hills so it looks higher than everything else. Add a yellow sun or a simple lantern above the mountain to remind children that God’s light shines on His people.
Plowshare Walk Game
You will need a few soft balls or rolled-up socks and an open space. Let the children pretend the balls are swords. Have them walk around the room, then slowly stop and pretend to change each sword into a tool for planting, like a shovel or rake. Say together, “We will use what we have to help others,” and let them act out digging and planting in slow motion.
Take-Home Breath Reminder
You will need a small piece of paper and a pencil for each child. Ask the children to write or draw one thing they tend to trust in too much, like a favorite toy or game. Then have them fold the paper and put it in a pocket or backpack. Encourage them to take a slow breath each time they see it and say a short prayer that God alone is worthy of their trust.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that God will one day gather people from every nation to know Him and walk in His ways. It also warns that human pride, wealth, and false idols cannot save us, and that the Lord alone is the one who should be exalted. Isaiah’s words call believers to humble trust rather than self-reliance.
With children, avoid making the chapter sound like it only describes a distant future with no connection to today. Keep the focus on the simple truths that God is trustworthy and that we can choose to walk in His light right now.
A Prayer to Close
Lord, we thank You that You are high and holy and good. Help us not to be proud, and help us trust You more than anything we can see or own. Teach us to walk in Your light every day. Amen.
