John 12 moves from a quiet dinner in Bethany to a crowd waving palm branches, then to a set of teachings Jesus gives just before he withdraws from public view. This page gives you ready-made questions and leader’s notes for a small group, a Sunday class, or a personal study. Each section can be used on its own, so you can pick the questions that fit the time you have.

John 12 at a Glance

The chapter opens six days before Passover with a meal in Bethany, where Lazarus, recently raised, sits at the table with Jesus. Mary’s costly act of anointing and Judas’s objection set up a contrast that runs through the whole chapter. The scene then shifts to Jerusalem, where crowds greet Jesus as king, and to a group of Greeks who ask to see him.

The second half of the chapter is Jesus speaking about his coming death, the judgment of the world, and the Father who sent him. The chapter closes with a summary of his public teaching and a warning about the choice each hearer faces. Reading the whole chapter in one sitting helps the group feel how the story builds.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first to establish what the text says before anyone offers an interpretation. Ask the group to point to the verse each time they answer, and resist the urge to explain too early.

John 12:3

Mary, therefore, took a pound of ointment of pure nard, very precious, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.

This verse describes Mary’s act of anointing in full detail, and reading it aloud helps the group picture the scene. It sets the tone for the chapter by showing devotion that is personal, costly, and unashamed.

John 12:24-25

24 Most certainly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 He who loves his life will lose it. He who hates his life in this world will keep it to eternal life.

Jesus’ image of the seed is one of the most quoted teachings in the chapter. Reading it aloud gives the group a chance to hear the paradox in Jesus’ own words before they begin to explain it.

John 12:32

And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”

(WEB)

This short sentence holds the central promise of the chapter. Reading it aloud helps the group hear its weight before they discuss what it means to be drawn to Christ.

John 12:44-46

44 Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me, but in him who sent me. 45 He who sees me sees him who sent me. 46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in the darkness.

(WEB)

These verses describe belief in Jesus as belief in the Father and presents him as the light. Reading them together lets the group hear the connection between seeing Jesus and seeing God.

John 12:47-48

47 If anyone listens to my sayings, and doesn’t believe, I don’t judge him. For I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 He who rejects me, and doesn’t receive my sayings, has one who judges him. The word that I spoke, the same will judge him in the last day.

(WEB)

Jesus says he came to save the world rather than to judge it, and that the word he spoke will judge those who reject it. Reading both sides of this teaching helps the group hold grace and responsibility together.

Memory Verse for John 12

This verse sums up the invitation of the chapter and is short enough to hold in mind through the week. Encourage each member to repeat it aloud at least once a day.

John 12:26

If anyone serves me, let him follow me. Where I am, there will my servant also be. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

(WEB)

Jesus calls his followers to serve him and to follow where he goes, and he promises that the Father will honor those who do. Memorizing it gives the group a simple command and a clear promise to carry into the week.

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come to you after reading about a woman who poured out costly oil at the feet of Jesus, and a crowd that waved branches as he entered Jerusalem. Give us hearts that are willing to give generously, even when others call it wasteful. Where we feel troubled, as Jesus did, teach us to bring our fears to you and to trust your purpose. Draw us closer to your Son, and help us to follow him where he leads. Make us bold to speak of him when silence would be easier, and let our lives reflect the light he has brought into the world. Thank you for the grace that saves rather than condemns. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
