Zechariah 8 is a chapter of restoration: the LORD returns to Jerusalem, promises to bring His people home, and calls them to live truthfully with one another while they rebuild. These questions are for small groups, Sunday classes, and personal study. Each section gives a leader a way into the text, with notes to help the discussion along.

Zechariah 8 at a Glance

The chapter opens with God’s zeal for Zion and His promise to dwell again in Jerusalem, called the City of Truth (verses 1-3). It then pictures a restored city full of elderly people and playing children (verses 4-5), and God’s commitment to gather His people from distant lands (verses 7-8). The middle section turns to the people’s responsibility: they are to be strong, to speak truth, to act justly, and to stop plotting harm against one another (verses 9-17).

The chapter closes with the fasts of mourning becoming feasts of joy (verse 19), and with a growing movement of nations coming to seek the LORD in Jerusalem (verses 20-23). A leader can move through the three question sets in order, reading the relevant verses aloud before each discussion.

Observation Questions

Use this set first, before anyone offers an opinion. Ask the group to point to the exact words on the page and to resist explaining them yet. Short answers and quick returns to the text work best here.

Zechariah 8:3

The LORD says: “I have returned to Zion, and will dwell in the middle of Jerusalem. Jerusalem shall be called ‘The City of Truth;’ and the mountain of the LORD of Armies, ‘The Holy Mountain.’”

(WEB)

This verse gives the central promise of the chapter, that the LORD returns to dwell among His people. Reading it aloud early in the session sets the tone for everything that follows.

Zechariah 8:8

And I will bring them, and they will dwell within Jerusalem; and they will be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness.”

(WEB)

Here the covenant promise is stated plainly: they will be His people and He will be their God. Hearing it spoken aloud helps the group see the relationship at the heart of the restoration.

Zechariah 8:13

It shall come to pass that, as you were a curse among the nations, house of Judah and house of Israel, so will I save you, and you shall be a blessing. Don’t be afraid. Let your hands be strong.”

(WEB)

This verse includes the reversal from curse to blessing and the repeated call not to be afraid. It works well as a midpoint reading to refresh the group’s focus on God’s purpose.

Zechariah 8:16-17

16 These are the things that you shall do: speak every man the truth with his neighbor. Execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates, 17 and let none of you devise evil in your hearts against his neighbor, and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate,” says the LORD.

(WEB)

These verses name concrete ways of living that the LORD commands. Reading them together helps the group move from theology to daily conduct, and it grounds the application questions.

Zechariah 8:23

The LORD of Armies says: “In those days, ten men will take hold, out of all the languages of the nations, they will take hold of the skirt of him who is a Jew, saying, ‘We will go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’”

(WEB)

The chapter ends with a vivid image of people from every nation drawn to a believer. Reading it last allows the group to end the study looking outward, toward the witness God’s people may carry.

Memory Verse for Zechariah 8

Zechariah 8:16

These are the things that you shall do: speak every man the truth with his neighbor. Execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates…

(WEB)

This verse is short enough to memorize and practical enough to use daily. Its call to speak the truth with a neighbor gives every conversation a standard worth keeping.

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come to You as the people You have promised to dwell among. Thank You that You are jealous for us with a faithful love and that You have chosen to return to the middle of our lives. Teach us to speak the truth with our neighbors, to act with justice and peace, and to put away plans that harm the people around us. Where we have grown weary or afraid, make our hands strong again and remind us that You are with us. Turn our sorrows toward gladness as You promised, and make us a blessing to those who do not yet know You. Use this time together to draw each of us closer to You and to one another. Amen.
