This guide gives you questions and leader’s answers for Matthew 2, the chapter about the visit of the wise men, Herod’s hostility, and the holy family’s flight to Egypt and return to Nazareth. It is built for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study, and each set of questions moves from what the text says, to what it means, to how to live it.

Matthew 2 at a Glance

The chapter opens with wise men from the east arriving in Jerusalem and asking where the newborn king of the Jews is. King Herod is troubled, gathers the chief priests and scribes, and learns from Micah’s prophecy that the Messiah will be born in Bethlehem. He secretly calls the wise men and sends them there, but they are warned in a dream and leave by another road.

Joseph is then warned in a dream to flee to Egypt, and the family stays there until Herod dies. Herod’s rage leads to the killing of the boys in Bethlehem, which Matthew connects to Jeremiah’s lament. After another dream, Joseph brings the family back to the land of Israel, and when he hears Archelaus is reigning in Judea, he settles in Galilee at Nazareth.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first, before anyone offers an interpretation. Ask the group to point to the text and read the relevant lines aloud, so that everyone is working from what is actually written.

Matthew 2:1-2

1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, 2 “Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him.”

(WEB)

Read this opening to set the scene and to hear the wise men’s purpose stated plainly: they have come to worship the newborn king. It is a good first passage for orienting the group before the questions begin.

Matthew 2:9-11

9 They, having heard the king, went their way; and behold, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, until it came and stood over where the young child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. 11 They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Opening their treasures, they offered to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

This passage holds the star’s guidance, the wise men’s joy, and their worship and gifts. Reading it aloud lets the group feel the contrast with Herod’s hostility that comes just before.

Matthew 2:13

Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.”

(WEB)

The angel’s command to flee is short and urgent. Hearing it read slowly helps the group sense the immediacy of Joseph’s response and the danger the child faces.

Matthew 2:19-20

19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, 20 “Arise and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who sought the young child’s life are dead.”

(WEB)

These words announce that the threat is over and tell Joseph to return to Israel. Reading them in the session reminds the group that God’s protection continues through every stage of the story.

Matthew 2:22-23

22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in the place of his father, Herod, he was afraid to go there. Being warned in a dream, he withdrew into the region of Galilee, 23 and came and lived in a city called Nazareth; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets: “He will be called a Nazarene.”

(WEB)

The chapter ends with Joseph’s decision to settle in Galilee and with Matthew’s prophetic note about Nazareth. Reading this final passage gives the group a clear sense of where the story leads and invites them to reflect on God’s guidance.

Memory Verse for Matthew 2

Matthew 2:10

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.

(WEB)

This verse captures the wise men’s response when the star appears, and it is short enough to memorize easily. Invite the group to say it together and to consider what it would mean to rejoice this way when guidance finally comes.

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank you for the way you guided the wise men, warned Joseph in his dreams, and kept the child safe from those who wanted to harm him. Help us to notice your direction in our own lives, and give us the courage to change our plans when you call us to. Teach us to worship you with the same joy the wise men felt, and to trust you when we cannot see the road ahead. Comfort those in our group who are grieving, and make us gentle with one another’s pain. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
