In this lesson, children learn that Jesus wants us to listen to his words and do them, like a wise builder who builds on solid rock. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

Jesus wants us to listen to what he says and actually obey it. When we do, we stand strong, just like a house built on a rock.

Memory Verse

Matthew 7:24

“Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his house on a rock.

Have the children stack their hands like building blocks, one on top of the other, then tap the top hand firmly as they say the verse. Repeat it together three times, stacking a little higher each time.

The Story: Matthew 7 for Kids

Jesus was teaching a big crowd on a hillside, and he had a lot to say about how to live. He told them not to be quick to point out other people’s faults while ignoring their own. He said, “Look at your own eye first,” and he used a funny picture of a big plank stuck in someone’s eye. The people listened carefully, because Jesus spoke with real authority.

Jesus also told them that God is a loving Father who gives good gifts to his children. He said that if people who are not perfect know how to give good things to their kids, how much more will God give good things to those who ask him. Then Jesus gave a rule that is easy to remember: treat other people the way you want them to treat you.

Next, Jesus talked about two roads and two gates. One gate is wide and the road is easy, but it leads the wrong way. The other gate is narrow and harder to find, but it leads to life. He also warned them to watch out for false teachers who look gentle on the outside but are dangerous inside, and he said we can know them by the good or bad fruit they produce.

Then Jesus told a story about two builders. One wise man built his house on a rock. One foolish man built his house on sand. When the rain came, the floods rose, and the winds blew, the house on the rock stayed standing. But the house on the sand fell down with a great crash. Jesus said that anyone who hears his words and does them is like the wise builder.

When Jesus finished speaking, the people were amazed at how he taught them. He did not teach like the other teachers of his day. He spoke as someone who truly had authority. Those who listened knew they had heard something important.

Read It Together

Matthew 7:7-8

7 “Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you. 8 For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.

Point out that Jesus says God hears and answers when we ask, seek, and knock. Ask the children what they might want to ask God for today, and let them know God loves to hear from them.

Matthew 7:12

Therefore whatever you desire for men to do to you, you shall also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets.

Show the children that this verse is a simple rule for every day. Have them name one way they could treat a brother, sister, or friend the way they would like to be treated.

Matthew 7:26-27

26 Everyone who hears these words of mine, and doesn’t do them will be like a foolish man, who built his house on the sand. 27 The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.”

Help the children see the difference between the house on the rock and the house on the sand. Explain that building on Jesus’ words means doing what he says, even when it is hard.

Talk About It

  • What did Jesus say we should do first when we notice a speck in someone else’s eye?
  • How do you think God feels when you ask him for something, and what does Jesus say he will do?
  • What is one way you can treat someone the way you want to be treated this week?
  • Why do you think the wise builder chose to build on the rock instead of the sand?
  • What is one thing Jesus told us to do that you find hard, and how could you ask God to help you?

Activity Ideas

Rock-Solid House Craft

You will need paper, crayons, glue, and a few small stones or pebbles if you have them. Have each child draw a simple house, then glue a pebble or draw a rock at its base. Talk together about how the rock keeps the house from falling when the storm comes.

Wise Builder Game

Set up two piles of blocks or cushions, one labeled rock and one labeled sand. Call out “wind” or “rain” and have the children run to the rock side, building steady houses with their arms. Then switch roles so the sand house is the one that tumbles, and talk about why listening to Jesus keeps us steady.

Take-Home Reminder Card

Cut index cards or paper into small squares and write Matthew 7:24 on one side, with a simple drawing of a house on the other. Encourage each child to tape the card to a bedroom door or a bathroom mirror. Ask them to share at dinner one thing they did that week because they listened to Jesus.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter is a call to a life that matches belief. Jesus is not describing a religion of words alone, but a faith that shows up in how we judge others, how we treat people, and how we respond to his teaching when it costs us something. The sermon ends with a strong reminder that hearing and doing belong together.

With children, avoid overstating the imagery of the gates, the fruit, or the warning about false prophets as if young children must sort out every hard idea today. Keep the focus on the clear truths: God is a good Father, we should treat others kindly, and building on Jesus’ words makes us strong.

A Prayer to Close

Dear Jesus, thank you for teaching us how to live. Help us listen to your words and do what you say, even when it is hard. Help us build our lives on you, our solid rock. Amen.
