This morning prayer is for asking God to open your heart before the day gets busy, so that you notice needs around you and give freely of your time, money, patience and attention. Pray it as you wake, over coffee, or on the drive to work. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayer for a Generous Heart

Lord, I am waking up to a day that is already full. There are emails waiting, a list of errands, people who will need something from me before the evening comes. Before I reach for my phone or start counting what I have to give, I ask you to soften my heart. Keep me from holding tightly to my time, my money and my patience as if they were only mine to keep.

Show me who needs encouragement today: the coworker who seems quiet, the child who wants me to listen, the neighbor who is struggling with bills or grief. Help me to notice them without rushing past. When I am tempted to say no out of tiredness or fear, remind me of how freely you have given to me. Let generosity be the way I answer the small requests of the morning.

Guard me from stinginess disguised as good sense, and from pride that gives only where it will be seen. Let my giving come from gratitude and not from guilt. Go before me into this day, and let me be a person whose hands are open. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, open my heart before this day begins. Help me to see the person in front of me, and make me willing to give time, kindness or help where it is needed. Keep me from holding on too tightly to what you have entrusted to me. Let my generosity today reflect the generosity I have received from you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 11:25

The liberal soul shall be made fat. He who waters shall be watered also himself.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a reminder that refreshing others is not a loss but a kind of blessing that returns to you. Ask God to make you someone who waters others first, trusting him with the outcome.

Acts 20:35

In all things I gave you an example, that so laboring you ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

(WEB)

Read this as Paul’s farewell words to the elders at Ephesus. Ask the Lord to shift your sense of happiness toward giving, so that your joy grows when you help someone else.

2 Corinthians 9:7

Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart; not grudgingly, or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver.

(WEB)

Use this verse to bring your motives into the light. Ask God to make your giving cheerful and free, so that nothing you offer today is pulled out of you by pressure or obligation.

Luke 6:38

“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be given to you. For with the same measure you measure it will be measured back to you.”

(WEB)

Pray this in gratitude for how God has provided for you. Ask him to help you give with the same open hand, trusting that he will meet your needs in his own time and way.

Matthew 25:40

“The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

(WEB)

Let this verse shape how you see the people you will meet today. Ask Jesus to help you recognize him in the ordinary faces around you, and to answer their needs as though you were answering him.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this while your hands are busy, such as while making breakfast, filling a water bottle or buttoning a child’s coat. Let the physical task remind you to hold your day loosely. If you can, keep a small reminder by the door, like a note or a coin in your pocket, so you remember the prayer when a chance to give comes up.

You might also pray it with someone else, such as a spouse, roommate or friend who is also heading into a busy day. Share one specific person or need you each want to see God work in, and then check in that evening to see how your generosity took shape.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord open the hands and the heart of this person today. May they notice the needs around them and find joy in giving what they have. May God’s generosity toward them overflow into every conversation and every kindness, and may they know they are deeply loved.
