This morning prayer is for the church you belong to, whether that is a small congregation that meets in a rented hall or a large community with several services each Sunday. Pray it as you start your day, before the phone and the inbox take over, while you are still holding your coffee or lacing your shoes. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayer for My Church

Lord, I start this day thinking of the people who gather with me under the same roof. Be with the pastors and elders who will open their calendars today and find more needs than hours. Give them wisdom in the decisions waiting on their desks, patience with the people who call, and rest when the work is finished. Keep their own families steady while they carry so much for others.

Father, go before the volunteers who will set up chairs, answer the nursery door, make the coffee, and check on the older members who live alone. Where someone is grieving, sick, out of work, or quietly struggling, let a friend notice and reach out today. Where two people in the body are at odds, soften both hearts and open a way toward honest conversation. Let our church be a place where people are welcomed and truth is spoken in love.

Thank you for every person I will see in the next few hours who belongs to your family. Help me to be kind to them, to pray for them by name when I think of them, and to follow through on what I have promised to do for them. Use my ordinary tasks today to build up the body I belong to. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless my church this morning. Be with our pastors, our leaders, and every volunteer who serves quietly. Show me one person I can encourage today, and give me the words and the time to do it. Keep our community close to you and close to one another. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:3

Being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the unity of your church, asking God to help members keep peace with one another when disagreements arise. Ask him to make you someone who builds that peace rather than wearing it down.

Romans 12:10

In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask that your church would be marked by real affection between people, not just polite greetings. Pray that you would notice where honor needs to be given today.

Hebrews 10:24-25

24 Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching.

(WEB)

Pray this for the encouragement that happens when believers gather and when they stay connected during the week. Ask God to stir in you a desire to spur someone on in love and good works.

1 Thessalonians 5:11

Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.

(WEB)

Bring this verse before God for the people in your church who need building up today. Ask him to show you how your words and actions can strengthen someone who feels discouraged.

Acts 2:42

They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer.

(WEB)

Pray this for your church’s shared life: the teaching, the fellowship, the prayer, and the meals. Ask God to keep these things central in the community and to renew them wherever they have grown tired.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the longer version while you are at the kitchen table or sitting in your car before you go in to work. Keep your Bible or a note with the church’s name on it nearby so your eyes have something to rest on. If you like to use your hands, hold a cup or a pen, or write the names of people you thought of while praying, and keep the list where you will see it again tonight.

This prayer also works well shared with a spouse, roommate, or small group who meet with you before work or school. Ask someone else to pray the blessing at the end over you, and let them pray the morning prayer for the church back to you the next time. Praying together in this way keeps the whole congregation in front of more than one set of eyes each morning.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who knows each member of this church by name go with them today. May he keep their going out and their coming in, strengthen their hands for the work in front of them, and surround them with the peace that stays. May the people who pray for them be met with grace, and may your church be a light to everyone who walks through its doors.
