This morning prayer is written for a new father who wants to start the day by placing his family, his sleep, his work and his worries into God’s hands. Pray it first thing, while the house is still quiet, or in the minutes between a baby’s feeding and the day’s first demand. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayer for a New Father

Lord, I wake up tired, and I thank You for this new day anyway. Thank You for the child who came into our home, for the small hands and the crying that wakes us both in the night. Give me patience for the feedings and the diapers, and let me see them as the ordinary work of love. Help me be present with my wife today, to notice when she needs rest, to speak kindly when I am worn thin, and to ask for help instead of pretending I have none.

Father, I carry a lot of fear this morning: fear that I will get something wrong, fear about money, fear about being enough for my son or daughter. Quiet those fears with the truth that You are already near to us. Show me what to do first today and give me the wisdom to do it well. Keep me from trying to be a perfect father and help me be a faithful one. Where I have failed, forgive me and teach me to start again. Guard my heart against bitterness when I am exhausted, and fill me with gentleness toward everyone I meet, at home and at work. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and a little scared, and I need You this morning. Be with my child and with my wife. Give me steady hands for the work ahead and a calm voice when I am worn out. Help me to love them well today, one hour at a time. Thank You that I am not doing this alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you look at your child, thanking God that the baby is a gift from Him and not a burden to be managed. Ask Him to help you receive each day’s care as a trust placed in your hands.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel drained before the day has begun. Ask God to renew your strength for the tasks in front of you, the early feedings, the commute, the evening hours, without asking Him to make the day easier.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this in gratitude for the mercy that meets you each morning. Thank God that His compassion is new when yours runs low, and ask Him to remind you of it when you make mistakes today.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this when you do not know what to do next, whether with a fussy baby, a hard conversation with your spouse or a decision about work. Ask God to give you wisdom freely, as the verse promises.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this when worry starts to crowd out your thoughts about the day. Bring each fear to God in specific words, and ask for the peace that guards your heart and mind as you move through the morning.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this before you check your phone or step into the nursery. Sit in a chair near the crib or in the kitchen with a cup of coffee, and let your hands rest open on your knees or around the mug. If you can, read the prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph to name one real thing you are carrying that day, such as a meeting, a bill, or a moment of worry about your baby’s health.

You can also pray it together with your wife, or ask a friend, a pastor, or a grandparent to pray it for you over the phone. Many new fathers find that hearing someone else speak these words lifts a weight they could not lift on their own. Keep the prayer somewhere you will see it, like the bathroom mirror or the refrigerator door, so it can greet you on the days when you have forgotten how to begin.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before this father into every hour of this day. May He give him steady hands, a patient heart and the strength to love his family well. May the child rest in God’s care, and may the mother be held and encouraged too. May the Lord’s peace settle over this home and remain through every waking moment.
