This morning prayer is for the moment before your day starts, when the to-do list is already crowding your mind and you want to hand the whole day to God. Pray it first thing, while the house is quiet or while you are making coffee, and read it aloud as written or use it as a starting point for your own words. Either way, it gives you a way to say, before anything else happens, that you are choosing to trust God with what lies ahead.

Morning Prayer for Trusting God

Lord, I am waking up to a day I cannot fully see. I already know some of what it will ask of me: the conversation with my boss that I have been dreading, the lunch I need to pack, the phone call to my mother that I keep putting off, and the list of things I am afraid I will forget. Before any of it begins, I want to give it to you. You know the hours ahead better than I do, and you were already there when I woke up.

Help me to stop trying to control every outcome. When I feel the tightness in my chest, remind me that you are steady even when my plans are not. Where I am tempted to rehearse worst cases before they happen, turn my thoughts back toward what is true about you. Give me patience with the people I will meet, honesty in the work I do, and enough wisdom to know when to speak and when to wait.

So I choose to trust you today. I trust you with the results I cannot guarantee, with the people I cannot change, and with the parts of my heart that still want to carry everything alone. Walk with me through the morning and into the evening, and let me notice your faithfulness in small things as well as large. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I start this day in your hands. I do not have to know how every hour will unfold, because you do. Steady my worried heart, help me take the next step in front of me, and let me rest in your care for the rest. I trust you with today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you consider the parts of your day you cannot plan for. Ask God to help you lean on his understanding rather than your own anxious forecasting, and to show you the paths he is already making straight.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when the morning feels crowded or overwhelming. Name God as your refuge out loud, and let the word “help” settle you before the first task of the day begins.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Use this verse to bring your mind back to God each time it drifts toward the day’s worries. Pray that your attention would rest on him, and that his peace would guard your thoughts through the busiest hours.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Let this passage shape how you bring your concerns to God this morning. Turn each worry into a specific request, and ask him to guard your heart with the peace that goes beyond what you can explain.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when yesterday left you tired or discouraged. Thank God that his faithfulness is renewed each morning, and ask him to show you fresh mercy for the day he has given you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this before you check your phone or open your inbox. Sit on the edge of your bed, stand at the kitchen sink, or stay in the car for a few minutes before going inside. If your hands want something to do, hold a warm mug or rest your palms open on your knees as a way of showing God that you are giving him something.

If you are praying with a spouse, a child, or a friend, you can take turns reading one paragraph each. Children can add one thing they are nervous about, and you can pray it with them by name. Keep the prayer short enough that you will actually return to it at lunchtime or on the drive home, when the day has started to press in again.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this day and walk beside you through every hour. May he give you clear thoughts, gentle words, and the courage to do what is right. May his peace hold your heart when plans change, and may you rest in the faithfulness that began with the sunrise.
