This morning prayer is written for the moment you think of a friend who is struggling, before the day’s messages and errands crowd in. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. It works best in the first quiet minutes after waking, while your friend is still on your mind.

Morning Prayers for a Struggling Friend

Lord, I bring my friend to you before this day starts. You know the weight they are carrying, the things they lie awake thinking about, and the questions they cannot yet answer. Be near them when they wake up and feel the heaviness return. Give them enough strength for the next hour, and let them know they do not have to pretend to be fine with you.

Go ahead of them today, into the conversations they dread, the phone calls they have been putting off, and the tasks that feel too large. Steady their hands and quiet their thoughts. Where they are tempted to believe they are alone or forgotten, remind them that you are present in every room they walk into. Give them rest tonight, and let them see at least one small sign of your kindness before the day ends. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my friend is struggling and I cannot fix it. Hold them up this morning. Give them courage for the first thing they must face, and gentleness toward themselves when they fall short. Let them feel your nearness in a way they can recognize. Keep them safe, and let me be a good friend to them today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the burdens your friend carries and placing each one in God’s hands. Ask him to sustain them through the morning, so they do not have to carry the weight alone.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and imagine your friend hearing Jesus’s invitation. Pray that they would feel permission to come as they are, tired and uncertain, and to receive rest rather than another demand.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God to strengthen your friend in specific ways today. Pray that they would remember God’s presence especially when fear rises in the middle of the day.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray that your friend would bring their anxieties to God rather than carry them silently. Ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind, even when circumstances have not yet changed.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray that your friend would notice God’s mercy renewed each morning, even when yesterday was hard. Ask that this fresh start would give them a reason to take one more step.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this before you check your phone, while you are sitting up in bed or standing at the kitchen sink with your hands busy around a cup of coffee. Keeping your hands occupied can help your mind settle. If you have a notebook nearby, write down one concrete thing your friend is facing so you can pick it up again later in the day.

Consider inviting another friend or family member to pray the same words for your friend on the same morning. Two people praying the same prayer can remind each other to follow up later, whether that means a text, a visit, or a simple question about how the day went.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before your friend this morning and walk with them through every hour. May he keep them steady when the day feels long, and surround them with people who show up with patience and care. May they know, even in small ways, that they are seen, loved, and held.
