This prayer is for the start of the day when you are thinking about a grown son or daughter who lives on their own, works their own job, or is walking through a season you cannot fix for them. Pray it over your first cup of coffee, in the car before you start the engine, or while you wait for the kettle to boil. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayers for an Adult Child

Lord, I bring my child to you before the day gets loud. You know their schedule better than I do: the meeting they dread, the phone call they have been putting off, the drive to work, the rent that is due, the friendships that are hard to keep. Go ahead of them into every hour. Give them clear thinking when they must decide something, and steady hands when they must do something hard.

I release the urge to manage their life from a distance. I confess that I still want to fix things, to ask too many questions, to hover over choices that belong to them now. Teach me to love them without taking the wheel. Let my words be few and kind today, and let them hear from you more than they hear from me. Guard their heart against loneliness and their mind against the fear that wakes up early. Where they are tired, give rest; where they are proud, give humility; where they are grieving, give comfort that does not need an explanation.

Thank you for the long years you have already walked with them. Thank you that you were at work in their life before I noticed, and that you will still be at work when I am not in the room. Hold them today. Keep them safe on the road and faithful in what they do. Let them know, somewhere in the middle of the day, that they are loved. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my grown child is heading into this day, and I cannot go with them. Walk beside them in the hard conversations, the long commute, and the quiet hours alone. Give them wisdom for what is ahead, peace where there is worry, and the sense that they are not carrying it by themselves. Help me trust you with the parts of their life I cannot reach. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray these words as a request for protection over your adult child’s comings and goings. Ask God to watch over their going out and their coming in, on the road, at work, and in the places you will never see.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage when you notice your own anxiety about your child rising. Bring the specific worries to God by name, then ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind to settle over both of you.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this as a way of handing over your need to direct your child’s choices. Ask God to guide their steps today and to make clear the path they are trying to find.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Let this passage carry your prayer for their strength on days when they feel worn down. Ask God to renew them for the work in front of them and to give them endurance for whatever is still ahead.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when you are afraid for your child’s future. Thank God that nothing can separate your child from his love, and ask that your child would rest in that certainty today.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment for it, such as the minute after your alarm goes off, the first sip of tea, or the walk to the mailbox. Keep a pen near your Bible or on the kitchen table so that you can write down anything specific your child mentions, and pray about it again later in the week. Some parents find it helps to hold a small object in their hand, a ring or a smooth stone, to keep their attention from drifting.

Consider inviting your spouse, a close friend, or a prayer partner to pray the same words for your child on the same morning. Many people find that a shared prayer across distance keeps them connected, and it reminds you that your child is carried by more people than just you. If you are able, call or text your child after you pray, not to report on the prayer, but simply to say you are thinking of them today.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your child and keep them. May he make his face shine on them and be gracious to them, and may he give them peace in every hour of this day. May they know, when the day is over, that they were loved from the first light until the last.
