This morning prayer is for the moment you wake up carrying a grudge you would rather set down. It can be read aloud exactly as written before you check your phone or start the coffee, or you can use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. Either way, it asks God to loosen the hold resentment has on your thoughts before the day gives it new reasons to grow.

Morning Prayers for Letting Go of Resentment

Father, I wake up and the old hurt is already waiting for me. I remember what was said, what was not said, and the way it still stings when I picture that person’s face. Today I will likely see them, or hear their name, or pass the place where it happened. Help me meet them with honesty and not with the story I have been replaying. Show me where I have been holding on because letting go feels like giving in.

Lord, I do not want to carry this into my conversations, my work, or the people who love me at home. Soften my heart before I reach for my keys or open my messages. Where I am wronged, give me the wisdom to speak truth without poison. Where I am tempted to keep score, remind me that I have been forgiven far more than I could ever repay. Take this resentment from my hands, and give me room to breathe again. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am still holding on to something from yesterday, and I feel the weight of it this morning. I choose to release it into your hands now, even if the feelings take longer to catch up. Keep me from rehearsing the hurt before I have even had my breakfast. Help me walk into today with an open heart and a clear head. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:31-32

31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and name the bitterness, anger and slander you are tempted to keep. Ask God to replace them with kindness and tenderness toward the person who has hurt you, trusting him to shape your heart.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by remembering a specific wrong and asking for the grace to bear with that person. Thank God that forgiveness is patterned on how he has already forgiven you.

Matthew 6:14-15

14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

(WEB)

Let this passage bring the matter into the open before God. Ask him to show you where your forgiveness is still conditional, and to help you release what you have been withholding.

Psalm 37:8

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath. Don’t fret, it leads only to evildoing.

(WEB)

Use this verse to address the anger rising in your chest this morning. Pray that God would calm your spirit and help you wait on him rather than acting out of heat.

Romans 12:19

Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.”

(WEB)

Bring the desire for revenge to God in prayer. Ask him to take up the justice you long to see, so that you can stop trying to settle the account yourself today.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this before you check messages or begin your commute, while the day is still quiet. Sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of something warm in your hands can help your body settle as your words slow down. If you have a journal, write the name of the person you are releasing and draw a line through it as you finish.

You might also ask a friend, spouse or small group member to pray it with you, especially if the hurt feels too close to speak alone. Let them hold you accountable to come back to this prayer if the resentment returns at lunch or in the evening. Forgiveness often has to be chosen again, and having someone to remind you makes that easier.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who forgave every debt you ever owed give you the freedom to release this one. May his peace guard your heart and steady your steps as you walk into the people and tasks of this day. May you meet each hard moment with patience, and may the Lord go before you with grace that is fresh every morning.
